I ended up just deleting that User Data folder in AppData, restarted, opened up Edge, it re-synced and seems to be working fine so far.
thx for the feedback. create regular backups for purpose if that happens again. profile damage has a cause which is not performed by edge itself or windows. it may point out a dying drive, or other intercepting nonsense software such as cleaners while edge is running, or a going wild security software. i also use edge on different machines, and also firefox, but i never had any damage like this for ages. even not for chrome/chromium when i copied profiles (user data) to another machine.
