My computer is a Lenovo Ideapad 110, Laptop. It is connected to an HP LaserJet Pro M118dw via WIFI. The Printer keeps going offline. If I remove the printer and then add it back everything works fine for a short time but then it goes offline again. I have had the printer for quite a while but I seldom use it. I am going to purchase an ethernet cable and see if that resolves the problem. Has anyone experienced anything like this? As always I will appreciate all replies and would thank you in advance.
Is the printer losing connection with your WiFi router, or is your notebook losing the WiFi connection to your printer. I had something similar happen to me. My wife's notebook could print using WiFi to our Epson Workforce printer, but my desktop kept going offline with the printer, after working fine for years. I uninstalled, and reinstalled the Epson software, with no results. I finally changed the port setting for the printer in Windows 10, and haven't had a problem since. My wife's notebook works fine on the default port setting, so I have no idea what happened on my desktop.
This is an accurately stated, confusing yet valid point. Next time it goes "off line" log into your router's admin menu and look at the "attached devices". If you see the printer there, it is still attached to your network and the problem is in your laptop. If you don't see it listed in your router's attached devices, the printer's connection to the router was lost. Ethernet my indeed resolve the problem IF the problem is the printer losing connection to the router. But simply moving the router and printer closer together may resolve the issue too.
Cloudcroft, I am not sure if the Printer is losing the connection to the Router or the Laptop is losing connection to the Printer. I will attempt to log into the router, as Bill Bright suggests, and see. The router is next to my printer so I can't move it any closer. If all else fails I will try and change the port setting. Marcello, my firewall and security software are both with ESET so I believe the configuration is okay. I have had ESET for at least 10 years and have had no problems. Mr. X, if all else fails I will change the Network Profile to Private and update the printer firmware. I appreciate all of your replies very much.
Sounds like a good plan. You might also check to see if there are any sleep settings that are taking it offline and it is refusing to wake up. An ethernet cable would probably solve that, as well as any other problem that is causing this. I wire all of my stuff to avoid issues like these.
I removed the printer, waited a day, and added it back. Everything is working fine. If it again goes offline I will start with the suggestions, one at a time. And as Bill pointed out I will ask my grandson to see if he can print. To be on the safe side I purchased an ethernet cable. Again, the suggestions/recommendations have been great and I certainly appreciate all of the replies I have received. John
I spoke too soon, the printer is again offline. I contacted Spectrum for assistance in looking at the router's admin menu to see the "attached devices". The technician said the router was too old for her to help me and that she was ordering a new router. The new router should be installed on Saturday and hopefully, that will resolve my problem.
A quick google search for "HP LaserJet Pro M118dw wifi issues" shows you are very much not alone. Hopefully the router gets it but if not, I'd be prepared with a cable.
The new router and modem did not resolve the problem. I removed and then re-installed the printer and while both, the printer and laptop were on everything worked perfectly. But as soon as I turned the laptop off the printer said it was offline. Turning my laptop back on didn't help. My grandson was able to print from his laptop. So apparently the problem is with my laptop. Until and if I can resolve this I will need to print using an ethernet cable. Oh well, I don't need to print that often.
If it worked at any point they are. I assume you don't have multiple Wi-Fi networks set up on your router?

My laptop and printer were connected to a network but when the Spectrum technician installed a new router and modem he created a new network. I was concerned that maybe my laptop was now on the new network but the printer was still on the old network. The only network that shows as connected is the new network so they both have to be on it. It baffles me when I remove the printer and then reinstall it that it works fine but after a short time or if I turn the computer off and then back on the printer is offline. I believe I will try one more time to install the printer, this time I will use the printer's IP number. Thanks for replying.
It would still be my guess that the printer is going into sleep or standby or similar and failing to acknowledge attempts to communicate with it but I guess that is still to be determined. Just for fun because it hasn't been mentioned that I have seen, what OS are you running?
My operating system is Windows 10 Home. By the way, the printer is working fine. I printed a couple of documents this morning using my ethernet cable. It is a mystery to me...
