Changing the UA prevents the popup. Not sure why I never thought of trying that. Thanks for the nudge!

I have been using Firefox exclusively for over 25 years. However this week I have tried to log into two of my accounts without success. The first was a US/UK financial
operation and they told me that they do not now support Firefox and to try Chrome - which of course worked. The second was a UK water utility. Again changing to Chrome worked.
I had logged successfully into these accounts within the last few months using Firefox so this is clearly a recent development. Very disappointing and depressing.
I've now got to try and tame Chrome which I never expected I would have to do.

I have encountered a few random sites that will only work in 1 browser, be it Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. It's why I have to keep all 3 on my desktop.

thats a decision from site, mozilla cant do anything. reasons are divergent, maybe some specific javascript, or some extension which is only available for chrome, who knows. anyhow its a poor decision. what does not mean i wont use edge which is installed and fitted like firefox.

what you can try for firefox to install an user-agent faking extension and to fake "chrome". either it works and you have luck, and/or gained some experience.

    edit typo

Thanks for the help. I tried disabling Enhanced Tracking Protection but it made no difference. Both are extremely "clean" sites and were showing no trackers anyway.
The help desk at the financial site were very quick to recommend Chrome and it looks like they have suddenly stopped supporting FF. The site allows me to fill in the user name and password but when I click on "Sign in" absolutely nothing happens
As for the water utility site, it also allows me to fill in user name and password but when I click sign-in I get an Oops page which says:

It looks like something has gone wrong when you’ve tried to log into MyAccount.

We use the Google Recaptcha service to help provide a secure online account management service for our customers. It’s likely that your login attempt has not met the necessarily criteria but there may be somethings you can do differently:

    • If you’re using a VPN then disconnect and try again
    • It may be that you’ve tried to login multiple times in quick succession without success. We recommend trying again later.
    • If you’re using an old browser we recommend updating to a newer version and trying again.
    • If you’re using a specialist web browser we recommend switching to a more commonly used browser.
Clearly the OP was correct to highlight the new guideline for developers last December. Google Rules OK anyone?

Good that you tried. Pity it didn't make any difference.
I would hate to need to use Google Chrome, also do its setup to try and tame it, as you said. Perhaps I would try Vivaldi or Brave (or Edge, if Windows was my OS), but even so, it would be an annoyance.

There is one more thing that I can think of, an issue and a sort of fix.
Using Firefox, I have encountered a few sites on which menus don't work as intended. I need to use the Firefox context menu and select "Open Link in New Window" to get the menu working. I doubt this can be helpful regarding your issues with the financial site and the water utility site, but I thought I should mention it anyway.

Thanks again fro your ideas. I've reluctantly decided to accept the inevitable and use Chrome for those sites that FF can no longer handle. Two at present but I'm sure this is a trend and there will be several more before too long. However I will continue to use FF for the remaining 99+% of my browser work.
I tried Brave btw and got the same result. It's clear that many website owners/developers are treating FF and other lesser used browsers as yesterday's products that can be ignored. It's a real shame.

Go here: https://google.com/recaptcha/api2/demo to verify Google Redaptcha is working properly. I passed using latest version of FF w/uBlock Origin extension.

    Oh, too bad.
So much for the idea another Chromium based browser might do the trick.

Vivaldi or Edge may give different results, because Vivaldi isn't that aggressive to ads and trackers as far as I know, and Edge comes from too big player to ignore probably

Brave also sometimes just does not work. It didn't even opened a window on my previous laptop (Windows 10)!

working here for firefox 129 any beyond.
but i dont know how to bypass with ublock, i think its not sucessable in common.

i tried the new chat-ai in firefox nigthly and when reloading google too much i get the captcha.

i cannot speak for older firefox or 115 esr which lacks of ability more and more. sure, chromium based have some advantage for google recaptcha, sad, but true. i use edge on work, and some trials here, but not issues yet that way.

i wouldnt abandon firefox that soon. and wait when manifest v3 has appeared finaly, which means 2025. we will see about market share. currently i dont see evidence against firefox.

dont think abou the money google is spending towards firefox. mozilla is aware of this and i think also, that mozilla is re-arranging its priorities toward firefox. firefox is central, their services are around firefox, that may change.

as i wrote, its a major decision, that stats show a low market share. well, for germany its another - higher - number.

I am looking positive forward until the bitter end, so i dont really count or negative articles or publicity concerning firefox.

This is unfortunate, of course. However, I suggest that you try the "Chrome Mask" add-on in Firefox. it's written by a Mozilla employee and describes itself as:

Please tell us if the site works with that add-on. Additionally you should report the site to Mozilla.

EDIT: And if you still intend to switch to Chrome I strongly suggest to use Brave instead and apply the settings suggested here.

As far as the recent posting of a UK bank no longer supporting Firefox, it appears it is not a new occurrence. Here's a like posting from 2021: https://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=3074984.

My opinion is the bank just doesn't want to deal with supporting Firefox anymore. Most likely due to its low usage rate compared to other browsers like Chrome and Edge.

There are many banks, so one may just open account in new bank that does support Firefox. Given that typical bank IT+app development department size is usually half of the whole institution size, its digital features are quite important nowadays. At least in my country banks rarely have some uniquely better offerings like substantially higher interest on saving accounts, so I don't see much of a reason to stay if they would stop supporting my browser of choice.

Perhaps you can try Vivaldi too? If it works OK and you like it, you can replace Firefox entirely. In my view, Vivaldi is way better.

Thanks for that - my experience is exactly the same as the OP in that link. You get to the login page in FF then nothing happens

Thanks for suggesting that. I've now tried the Chrome Mask extension but it makes no difference. So I'm sticking with Chrome for these two websites for now.

I see, how sad. And you did explicitly activate the add-on on that site? Because it's deactivated by default.

its just another user agent switcher for rare use. for Dennis itself, he is knowing best how to use Firefox abilities. Mozilla has released a lot of extensions for this and that, eg. the Facebook Container or the multi account container.

Firefox is able to perform a lot of chrome code (in general), but some websites are poorly written, for chrome only. this make help users out in commonn.

this DOES NOT mean that firefox is faking or mitigating chrome code, never. mozilla has its own to-do list to acomplish.

    have fun with firefox

I use Firefox 129.0.2 and have no problems with the website you mentioned. To test it, I entered some fictitious data into the login form and got the message that the login data was incorrect. So the login form works in Firefox.

That's interesting. I'm using the same version - can only think it's an extension. It's not uBo and I've got Enhanced protection turned off. I check them when I get a chance.
