My daughter has a personal laptop she had not used for a while. When trying to activate it recently she forgot the password. After some unsuccessful attempts the laptop locked. Is it possible to activate it (bypassing the password) and then deleting the password
@samy What OP system is on this computer and you probably haven't did a password reset disk/USB? If it's Windows 10 or 11 it's easy, if it's older, not sure if the same method will work. Peobably works there too. All I can say in advance is to enable the built-in admin account and then use it. It doesn't require any password, unless you've reconfigured it yourself. So you can then login as an administrator, but without any password and then you can do whatever you want, includin change any user name or/and password.

Is your computer locked or can't log in? Somehow I don't understand, at first you said you can't log in because you don't remember the password? And if so, one more question - did you really only have a local account or did you still use a Microsoft account. If so, it's even easier. Of course, there is nothing complicated there, even if you had a local account. But this, of course, if it is the case that you cannot log in to your Windows. If the computer is locked, then the matter is much more complicated. So, please state again and clearly what your problem is now. Either your computer is locked or you just can't log into Windows. And also this thing - whether online activation with Microsoft account or the local activation was used. @kaljukass when she switched on the PC she was asked for a Password (IMHO it is the Microsoft PIN account). After some attempts with wrong password, she cannot "go" (log) into the windows. the PC is not allowing for an additional attempt.
If you enter the wrong PIN code multiple times, it will indeed trigger a security mechanism to protect your computer and personal information. Typically, you will see the message "A1B2C3" below the password input box to restore normal access. Alternatively, you can wait for a period of time (30-60 minutes) and then attempt to log in again using your account password instead of the PIN code. Or you can reset your PIN: On the sign-in screen, select I forgot my PIN below the PIN text box. If there are multiple accounts on the PC, choose the one you need to reset. On the Enter your password screen, type the password for your Microsoft account, and then select Next. On the Help us protect your info screen, choose to receive your security code either as a text or email message. If you select text, type the last four digits of your phone number, and then select Send Code. In the Set up a PIN dialog box, enter your new PIN and confirm it. Your new PIN is now set. Note: Make sure you’re connected to the internet by selecting Network on the lock screen of your device. And if you don't remember the PIN, you can always log in with the password, which you usually remember, because it's the same as the Microsoft account password.
