Windows 11, the gift that keeps on giving

The brave new future is here, or something. Here's a fresh dose of beautiful rantology in the form of my new, periodic review of Windows 11, covering broken Windows Update functionality, recovery via Windows Installation Assistant, post-update issues like Windows Defender being re-enabled against user choice, Open-Shell being removed against user choice, broken winget, slow Windows Explorer performance, bad ergonomic choices, screenshots and accessibility, changes related to privacy, some other observations, and more. And this is before the magical ay eye Utopia goes full mainstream. Hi hi.

Holy crap, is it still this bad? To be honest, Win 11 is the only thing stopping me from buying a new laptop. But Win 12 will probably be even worse. Win 10 is still pretty good though.

BTW, is it true that BitLocker will now also work on Win 11 Home? And what are your thoughts on MS enforcing it, is it a good thing?

Microsoft's ongoing push to impose its' own solutions and exclude other software is reminiscent of the 1998 anti-trust lawsuit, which they have apparently forgotten they lost.

The main issue in 24H2 26100.712 - the RTM build is the new Recall app that's baked in and you cannot remove it. Basically, its an AI keylogger that takes snapshots of everything you do so you can retrieve what you forgot or overlooked later. Catch is you need an NPU for it to run and that's exclusive to Microsoft's new Copilot + PCs. You want a computer where your software or Microsoft - is the boss of what you can do on it. Like how about NO? Its the ultimate future of software as a service where you are the product. I don't mind a personal assistant but I draw the line at not being able to get rid of it when it stops being useful. Bonzi Buddy was annoying at times but it was never intrusive and you could uninstall him if it suited you. Microsoft has made sure Recall is around whether you want it or or not or need it or not. You will own nothing and you will be happy!

I am assuming the comment author was just being sarcastic, because Windows 11 and 10 share the same Kernel. Any exploit written for Windows 11 will also work on Windows 10.

Not all Windows issues are exploits. Actually most of them are not. It was a funny quote though.

Interesting they added it this quickly. As this Recall thing will require a NPU it won't be a problem for most folks until they go to buy a new device.

To be fair, I wonder if this feature will work correctly because O&O ShutUp 10 could not disable Cortona on my Win 10 machine. I have also tried the registry and PowerShell trick, and it's still active.

I'm sue this has been asked and answered already, but can you get the old Win10 task bar back without third party tools?

Pretty sure that's a no and after a quick search I'm not finding anything to the contrary. Closest you're going to get is to left align the icons and turn off anything you don't want to see in the settings.

The main reasons I haven't upgraded my Windows to 11 yet, are the taskbar and clunky Explorer ... how do MS deem these to be 'improved'? o_O:thumbd::isay:

Have they actually claimed that they were improved? At least there is Start11. I haven't found a File Explorer replacement I have found suitable yet. Directory Opus was nice but a bit too much, and everything else I tried has been lacking.

As a recent Windows 11 user, I did extensive research on this issue before upgrading, and the answer is "NO". The taskbar code is still there but unless you are a programmer that can code their own app to access this code, you will have to depend on third-party tools to get the old taskbar back.

By the way, the only apps that give you the ability to put toolbars on your taskbar, like the "Quick Launch toolbar" or "Links toolbar", are ExplorerPatcher and StartAllBack. The rest of them do not have this ability.

After using Windows 11 full-time for the last few months, all I can say is that "Windows 11 is a dumbed-down version of Windows 10". You need multiple clicks to get the same thing done, unless you use a third-party tool to make your life easier. It is certainly not an improvement over Windows 10!

Yeah, that's what I thought. Thanks guys.

I created a bootable UFD using Rufus bypassing the System Requirements, then copied the files to desktop on my newer PC. The only requirement that this machines doesn't meet is the CPU. After imaging my machine I clicked on setup.exe which successfully installed Win11. It was an in place upgrade over Win10. Most settings and installed programs remained . After a bit of a play I was not impressed, so restored my image from the backup.
Funny you should say that, Raza0007. That is exactly my thoughts too. I can't believe Microsoft thought Win11 was an improvement over Win10.

I may buy a subscription to 0Patch once Win10 goes EOL on that machine. My laptop is still having issues with Kubuntu, so I'm not sure what I'll do with that when the time comes.

I haven't seen such a claim, but that was my assumption re Win 11 over Win 10. So I concur with @Raza0007 and @Krusty.

Yeah, newer isn't always better. In my opinion Windows 7 was the best thing they ever did. XP was probably second.
