New sneaky Windows driver UCPD stops non-Microsoft software from setting defaults

    Microsoft wants to stop you from making changes to your PC of which it doesn't approve.

    The problem is they don't view your PC as being yours; you're just leasing its use from them.
    (My first post from under Mint, newly installed on my former Win10 tablet. :D)

    They do view it that way. I'd use Edge more if they didn't want me to use it so badly.
    Congratulations on the Mint installation. If I retired or changed professions I would be looking to do the same.

    this service is protected, even SC wont help you out.

    go registry
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\UCPD
    and set Entry "START" to "4", restart windows

    you cant do this in \CurrentControlSet\

    i tried again after reboot, you are right.
    what not works: sc stop ucpd
    after reboot
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/debug/system-error-codes--1000-1299-
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/debug/system-error-codes--0-499-
    when active exit code is 0

    I can confirm that the service and the Task remained disabled after today's Windows update. :)

    I have the pleasure of Windows Update not pestering me.

    I appreciate 24H2 26100.1 as a "still" build.
