I doubt it. But in all fairness, it's not just MS, but also other security companies like Symantec and SentinelOne who make big design errors, see link.

I remember when Microsoft bought Sysinternals so they could get Mark Russinovich. I don't know if that is what you are thinking of but it was a good get.

 

Forced an update search in Settings and got an update to the Antimalware platform. It's too soon probably for a changelog but I def. allowed the update to happen. This is my Windows 10 drive, not 11.

Does anyone have info on this yet? The last entry to discuss changes in the Microsoft blog was August 30th. Prob too early.

 

Mine updated automatically today on W10 and briefly gave an error message telling me to "activate" Defender.

 

Whoa, really. What caused that, you wonder? Hopefully it doesn't happen any more, right?

 

The toaster message disappeared before I could even click it, so I supposed Defender had to restart itself for the update to take effect. I always enable Tamper Protection and use CD on Interactive.

If anyone else is interested, I just now forced an update in Settings and got an update to the Antimalware Platform.The changelog isn't particularly ominous--mostly improved performance with other stuff. It's KB4052623. I will update my Windows 11 drive whenever. What my System Info looks like right this minute:

Hey another pro tip! If you decide to disable MSD using all the stuff you need to change in the group policy but then you want to start using it again and it won't work...like it tends to do.

Re-enable tamper protection and do a soft restart...I had it turned off because I use Defender UI. I feel stupid for not thinking of doing that....the only things that can really disable MSD are third party antivirus programs and malware with the right digital signature.

Use the swiss cheese approach, nothing is infallible. I use MSD as a scanner and not much else. I already have good protection from the other stuff I use

 

BTW, does Win Defender alerts about EagleGet being malware? It's flagged on VirusTotal by 18 out of 73 vendors (not by WD) and also isn't available on Softonic anymore. I'm guessing it's indeed malware, I just wondered if WD picks this up.

It's not malicious. But some AV products like ESET have added the exe into their PUA detections. There are also two other files one of which is detected by Kaspersky as PUA (Not-a-virus:...), another file is detected by Trend Micro as PUA. It's safe to delete those files and use the program for downloading files. I have clean portable version that I sometimes use to download large files. I think the program is not maintained anymore.

i have tested on several laptops old and new,but it's pretty slow compared to other av like avira, kaspersky and eset
have you noticed that in the last windows updates w11 and w10 is pretty slow?
are there some settings to improve the performace?

OK thanks, so it's more of a PUA and not really hardcore malware. I was looking for a replacement for YTD Video Downloader which is now shareware apparantly, same goes for 4K Video Downloader. But I don't believe EagleGet will work with certain websites.

Major Geeks' post is dated July 12, 1922 and is therefore out of date with respect to the current version of ConfigureDefender.
