Got it again, and as indicated by you, I have postponed Windows Updates until February 28.

I just "love" the vagueness of the changelog for 19045.4046. This update addresses "security issues" for your Windows operating system. Like, what? Does it help with the partition re-sizing so some who are still grappling with this can get KB 5034441 installed? Or no?

I'll keep looking for some kind of expanded explanation of what I've installed on my PC. :cautious:

Is it really or trustful to do updates? I will lay low, with OSA, and Appguard i have a fuzzy feeling.

Both of the February patches (MSRT and KB5034763) installed on my Win 10 Pro machine without any problems. As a precaution I disconnected the laptop from all peripherals before the required reboot.

I installed Windows Update MiniTool to get a little control over my updates but it appears to be worthless. This morning I downloaded and installed a security intelligence update for Defender Antivirus; all went well and as expected. There were three other updates which I chose to not download for now so I closed the program. Later I went back to check something and it told me a reboot was required. So I rebooted, went back to WUMT to check my history and installed updates. Apparently Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64 (KB5034685) installed without my knowledge or consent. In history it also says KB5034763 is "in progress," whatever that means. In WUMT, Automatic Updates is set to "Disabled." Thinking back, I remember reading that automatic updates of Cumulative Updates for .NET Framework are nearly impossible to stop. If anyone knows of a program that actually works and can stop ALL automatic updates, please help me out.

Thanks pegas. Ideally what I'm looking for is something like WUMT that actually works. That is, when it says automatic updates are disabled, that means ALL. I have Windows 10 Home, so GPE isn't an option. I tried the fixes that supposedly allow it to be activated in Win 10; but if they worked at some point in the past they no longer work, at least not on my Lenovo laptop.

I think what I may do is pause automatic updates in Windows and see if WUMT still works. I have the Windows Update service on manual and I think what might be happening is when WUMT runs it starts the service and give Windows Update an opening to install automatically. Or Windows Update itself starts it and installs automatically. Hopefully this will work; keeping fingers crossed. :)

Went ahead and installed everything else offered without any problems.

Doesn't work. If you pause Windows Update, WUMT doesn't work. It searches and says it succeeded but it doesn't show any updates which I know are available; it doesn't show updates I've hidden; and it only shows 2 installed updates when it shows 13 with Windows Update not paused. Back to the drawing board I guess. :(

    Is this explanation enough?
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows
copilot is disabled with GPO here, sorry, you did not ask how to do this.
for the recovery update - 2 of my windows 10 installations (multi boot) were set to winre of win11 on same machine, funny, aint it? (i usedvisualbcd and bcdedit to determine and alter all settings)

anyhow the fourth untouched win10pro has "[unknown]" for winre - i guess this was gone with the movement to a new ssd while deleting another win10 partition. nothing worked so this for comparison untouched win10 went anywhere and need rebuild from scratch - some time, maybe, or never, dont care. the winre is for mbr on the current c partition. for any othe you still need to expand the recovery partition on your own, this should not be too much effort but it seems easier still blaming and raging about microsoft. yes, **** happens. yes, it has more than once written a tutorial for it.

the current monthly update had no issues on win10/11.

anon had already posted Bleeping Computer's explanation of what KB5034763 addressed. I was perfectly satisfied with that, esp. considering Copilot wouldn't be harassing me if my task bar was positioned to the right. And it hasn't. :thumb:

I don't know exactly what you're saying with regards to the partition--is it that you couldn't get KB 5034441 installed until you replaced your ssd and reinstalled Windows from scratch? That makes sense, though, as I had to reinstall Windows myself due to a missing WinRE (no recovery tools). Once that installed via repair-installation (ISO from desktop, keeping all apps, data, settings). that BitLocker update went thru without anything needing to be done to any partition.

I had no problems installing KB5034763 either. I just wanted to know what it was about. :)

Ok I am redoing the post as per moderator notes.

It seems I am not the only one with this problem:

I've encountered other similar posts on reddit as well.

KB5034203 is now 3 weeks old, why ranting now?
and no, nothing here, but i did not tweaked my taskbar like crazy. thats what i assume for their machines.
and without further information and investigation its pretty pointless to rant or accuse.

What are you talking about? The problem is caused by KB5034763 which is the current one. And didn't tweak anything as I don't count the pinned shortcuts to the taskbar as a tweak, lmao.
What further information is required since the update is altering the explorer.exe and that's described in the changelog as well. My system is very well maintained and never had any issues with updates so far.
And a lot of friends of mine are having issues after this one specifically. And this wasn't a rant at all. It was just a warning for the others to be careful with this one. I can easily fix this by restoring an image, which I will do tomorrow since restoring during a working week is not the best idea, but MS definitely should fix this.

    A small update:
This time I've uninstalled it trough WUSA and not trough WU and the problem disappeared.

Now I paused the update until it's fixed. I will not restore the image in that case, nor I will not be doing additional troubleshooting like creating a new user account, creating a task scheduler to restart explorer.exe after login-in, replacing the new version of the explorer.exe with the old version from the image file etc. So definitely the update caused the issue for me. It seems that Win 11 users were affected as well (not all, but some of them).

I would patch known security holes without thinking twice, if patches would never cause problems, it's that simple. But anyway, perhaps I misunderstood, I thought this thread was about people posting all kinds of problems that they encountered after installing patches and updates, which would prove my point. But I haven't actually read this thread in all of those years. All I know is that my PC runs just fine without any updates in 20+ years, and no problems with malware.

Well as I've posted, in my experience, it is exceptionally rare for updates to cause issues. So I'd much rather have the increased security which comes from having a patched system, than worry about the miniscule chance that an update will cause problems. Sure, some people do have issues after updating, but as I've mentioned previously, in many cases, it could be due to excessing tweaking or using privacy tools. I say that, because my experience with updates on the whole not causing issues, is based on running updates on hundreds of different PCs, not just one or two.

Usually I am in the same boat, but this time they did something wrong on their side. I didn't tweak anything that could trigger such behavior.
At least regarding the articles, Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and preparing a fix.

That update didn't cause issues for me. But yes, there are rare occasions when updates cause widespread issues.
