On my old W7 laptop trying to copy an internal SSD to a larger internal SSD connected via an old USB adapter throws an error using different and well known imaging and partitioning applications. and some others as well such as Eassos DiskGenius, AOMEI Backupper, etc. Is there any solution out there?
Not really... the target disk has the wrong sector geometry (4096b/sector instead of 512b/sector). You'll need to use a different disk for the copy.
First of all, I'm very surprised that a target drive that old (Kingston MPN: SUV400S37/240G) would have a 4096 sector size. Although Kingston's spec sheet doesn't supply that information (major issue), I have found reference to that disk that the sector size is 512/512E. If so, the dock/connection representing it is wrong. I would reformat the drive (complete FORMAT, not quick), using a different type of connection (put it in the laptop and do the formatting there) then try again using the external connection.
@Mr.X First of all, it must be clear whether you want to copy data or you want to make a copy of the old disk. If you want to copy only data, it doesn't matter what the format of these disks is, only the data will be copied, not format. But if you want to make a copy, the new partitions should be the same as the old ones. And then you can make so-called data copies. But if you want to make a copy to transfer all the data from the old disk exactly as it is on the old disk, it is recommended to use sector-by-sector transfer/copy, and then it is not recommended to format the disk before this operation. Otherwise you will get a message like you said above. I have done this many times, but generally I use AOMEI Partition Assistant and then/there is never possible to do anything wrong, the program itself provides all the options with explanations. So far there have been no problems. So I don't quite understand what you want to do and why this problem would occur in the first place. But that was how I usually do it.
Is the target disk empty? Couldn't you just delete any existing partitions and let the copy software create it?
@kaljukass An exact full copy (clone) of the disk not only a simple data transfer. Thanks for the AOMEI Partition Assistant tip, most likely I'm going to try it. Let me tell you guys that before I entered here to reply, I started another attempt using a software called Casper by Future Systems and it seems to do the job. It's going to complete in about 30 min. Let's see what happens when I mount the disk into the laptop...
I like Casper. I've been using it for years, from the early versions. I clone the drive fairly often so that my clone is kept up to date-ish In between I use other software (DSynchronize Portable by Dimio) to back up certain static folder/ files etc (you just have to be careful to set it up right) Prior to Casper, I used XXClone I'd be interested to know how you get on with Casper and if it serves your purposes.
Yes, the program started copying the disk and finished it: Afterwards I swap drives in the laptop, the disk ended unbootable though. "Missing operating system". Next thing I did was booting a WinPE and launched AOMEI Partition Assistant to analyze the unbootable drive and it showed unformatted partitions on all the disk: So I ended up doing a full disk image with TeraByte Image for Windows and restoring it on the target SSD drive while AOMEI Partition Assistant showed partitions correctly: All good now as expected. @Mr.X Hi so only AOMEI Partition Assistant could do the job correctly ,could not it? just because I have read you have used image for windows and r-drive , not macrium ,and they could not do the job for what i have understood , just for other users could have the same problem AOMEI Partition Assistant is free,isn'it? thanks @kaljukass hi may I ask you a question ? just because i haven't understood do you mean to make a full disk copy should be a raw/sector-by-sector copy with image for windows/linux r-drive or macrium? do you mean all the partition should be copied separatly or how could be created partition the same of the old one ? thanks sorry english is not my native language
