I have a small form factor pc with a mechanical sata hard drive. I purchased a new sata SSD drive and I am looking for the easiest what to go about it. Both are 500 g drives. I am a senior and am getting a little confused trying to determine from the internet how to do it.

I have Macrium reflect and Hasleo program installed on my computer. I can make a clone or a full disk image. Once I have that on my external hard drive, and then install the new SSD in the computer, how would I get the image or clone from the external drive onto the new SSD since it is empty and has no imaging program is on it? thanks in advance for any replies

With Macrium REFLECT you need to create a Recovery Media on a USB flash drive. Once that's successfully done, make sure you create your "final" hard disk image, the one that will be used on your new SSD. When you replace your hard disk with your SSD, you will then BOOT into your Recovery Media and restore your final image on to the new SSD. Normally this is pretty painless. Make sure you read up on creating your Macrium Recovery Media AND have a USB stick available to build it on.

The restoration process is pretty straight forward... the Forum will help you if you have misunderstandings along the way. I'm surprised you don't already have a Recovery Media built... it is an absolute necessity. Without it, those backup images of your are useless if you lose your laptop's main disk.

Thank you - I have recovery media for both Macrium reflect and Hasleo. I have made full disk image with Hasleo, and have recent sytem images on both. But I'm not clear how I will boot into the recovery media. My operating system of course be out and all I will have is the images on my external drive.

when I boot into the recovery media do I just find the image on my external drive and hit restore>

Should I use the system image, or the full disk image. (I only use one partition for everything - the system image contains everything on my hard drive.)

(the old and new drives are both 500G.)

I apologize for asking all these simple questions, but I only have this one computer and once I start I will not me able to access the forum.

You may need to change boot order im BIOS or UEFI, or open one time boot device choice menu early in the boot process (usually hit F12 few times)

All of this exactly. I have done this multiple times without any issues.

@jima - If you can give us a make'n'model # of your laptop, we can probably walk you through the process before you get caught up in it.

And please... don't be afraid to ask questions here ;)

Once we get you to your Recovery Media RESTORE screen, you will, most likely, have to provide (2) main pieces of information (Macrium or Hasleo)... the latest Full/Diff/Inc you wish to restore to, AND possibly the device you want to restore it to... that's about it.

But see if you can get us a Make'n'Model # and we can go from there as far as a process is concerned.

Thank you very much Froggie. I have a small factor desktop, and was encouraged to give it a try after reading your first post. All went well. You're right it certainly was straight forward - nothing more than installing the the SSD, and restoring the image.

I appreciate so much being able to get help from you and the other knowledgeable people here . It allows me to accomplish things that I might not otherwise attempt.

macrium, full clone, boot medium change if you want to use both. otherwise i recommend to unplug the hdd and test ssd only to avoid mismatch in many ways. if working, then you can add hdd again, format it, store it for failure in a cabinet, whatever. for ssd i recommend also AHCI
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci]
    "ErrorControl"=dword:00000000

insert reg-tweak, and restart windows. repeat for any other windows (if multi-boot).
ahci makes ssd using full power and not throttled.

look on ssd vendor page for new firmware, for samsung use samsung magician, then uninstall it again.
