See my 01-Sep-2023 How to Check Portable Apps on Removable USB Stick for Available Updates? in the Patch My PC forum as well as my 09-Sep-2023 Request for Additional Software and Detection of Updates Portable Apps (vs SUMo) which includes an attached .txt file listing the 7 installed apps and 25 Portable apps I use that are currently detected by SUMo but are not monitored by Patch My PC.

My 13-Oct 2023 post # 428 in this thread also shows how Patch My PC can report the incorrect version number of a Portable app (i.e. an app that does not require installation and is typically distributed as .zip or single .exe file) after that Portable app is downloaded by Patch My PC.

A Patch My PC employee has not responded to any of my concerns or suggestions regarding their product. On the other hand, UCheck developer Tigzy is willing to engage with users, has already expanded the list of installed software monitored by UCheck by adding a new category of over 17,000 Community (version detection only) apps (i.e., where the latest available version is based on a consensus of data collected from the community of UCheck users) in addition to their standard list of ~ 250 fully supported (version detection / update / install) Compatible apps listed at https://www.adlice.com/ucheck-software-list/. Tigzy is also in the process of expanding their list of Portable apps that will be detected in a future release of UCheck.

I have not decided what software updater program I will be using to replace SUMo when it reaches end of support on 31-Oct-2023 but UCheck is the only program I have tested to date that could be a suitable replacement for SUMo.

@Tigzy seems the setting does not stick if you switch it off is that expected behavior?

I just start the portable application, switch it off, close the application and start it again and it's back on.

 

After excluding an "update" the available updates counter does not get a -1 in this case resulting in an 1 available, empty list.

 

Is it started as admin or low privileges ? Maybe an ACL issue
EDIT: Ok I got the answer with your picture, it's low priv. Does it persist if you are admin ?

 

Yes this was limited user account, but also fails on Admin stays enabled.

 

mmh, at this point I'd say try to remove the entire folder: C:/ProgramData/UCheck. And retry.

 

Doesn't resolve, and also reproduces on a VM.

 

When you say it happens with admin too, do you mean it's happening when you switch it OFF with admin rights ?
Better go to DM if we need more back and forth about this bug.

Here are the six Community apps with OUTDATED = YES that UCheck v5.0.0.0 detected today. The detection for the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant was the only correct detection for my Win 10 system so the rest might have to be "un-promoted" for now.

• Mozilla Maintenanace Service. See my post # 436 about why the VERSION listed in the registry does not always accurately reflect the maintenanceservice.exe file version located on the hard drive that is actually in use.
• Goodix Fingerprint Reader Driver. The Dell Update utility recommends v3.10.30.110 (rel. 06 Nov. 2019) listed on the support page <here> for my Inspiron 15 5584 and not the v3.12804.0.180 recommended by UCheck. Dell no longer provides custom drivers for this fingerprint reader and I disabled this device in Device Manager a few years ago so I don't bother keeping the driver up-to-date.
• Windows PC Health Check. Not sure. This utility is updated by Windows Update when necessary as KB5005463 (last updated 06-Sep-2023), so perhaps this is a Win 11 version?
• Epson Scan 2 and Epson Event Manager. Not sure. I rely on the Epson Software Updater utility to keep the software and drivers for my Epson XP-7100 AIO printer updated and the versions recommended by UCheck are not offered on the support page <here> for my printer. Perhaps versions differ between printer models
  
• Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (MSRA). Detection correct. This is a tool used to detect and repair problems with MS Office Click-to-Run installations that I haven't run for a few years. I launched the outdated version today and it offered to install the MSRA v17.01.0495_023 currently offered at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...ssistant-e90bb691-c2a7-4697-a94f-88836856c72f.

I'm still seeing my UCheck v5.0.0.0 user interface close when I click an Open Website link on the Updates tab - at least for some of my Community apps. I tested today with Mozilla Maintenance Service and submitted the debug report at the next launch. When I tested yesterday clicking an Open Website link generated a full program dump file that took several minutes to upload.

I'm guessing you need a new version in which this crash has been resolved.

Thanks for adding the abilibity to exclude unsupported programs (no highlighting) and adding back the option to skip this update in version 5.0.1.10. All is working very well for me now. Thanks for all the hard work!.

More bugs spotted, but we had to ship because of the nasty crash.
EDIT: Yes there's an inversion in column names in "Installed". We'll fix that
EDIT2: Version number empty leads to "Outdated", we'll fix that.
EDIT3: Since exclusions have changed, it's advised to remove them all and redo.

 

No crash opening the webpage anymore. But if I click the link, only my browser launches, but no webpage is loaded...

 

@Tigzy : Missing notification for Notepad++ 8.5.8

 

Notepad++ is a compatible program so it is presumably using only scraped data to identify an update. UCheck is still listing 8.5.7 as "Status". It takes time to visit the websites and find this data. UCheck users, such as myself, are already on 8.5.8 which was announced on sites like MajorGeeks.com. Use of commmunity-based data may provide faster notification of updates and it may be useful to handle compatible programs using both methods.

 

I ran another scan today and it found four more updates. One thing I'd like to see is the option to exit the program when clicking on the close icon, as I don't want it to keep running in the system tray. I know there's an exit button, but it would be nice if there was the option to change the behaviour of clicking on the close icon.
