Another alternative to a free Microsoft Office, this has a very similar UI Download: https://www.onlyoffice.com/download-desktop.aspx?utm_source=main_site&utm_medium=default_page&utm_campaign=download_desktop&utm_content=download_now
I never heard of it before this but I threw it into a Virtual Machine and tested it with some reports that are in .docx format with a lot of tables. Rendered it better than LibreOffice does. I can't speak to its stability or security but so far it looks worthy of additional testing.
There was a Wilders thread earlier, and two Dedoimedo articles. https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/onlyoffice-desktop-editors-review-a-challenger-appears.418050/ https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/onlyoffice-desktop-editors.html https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/onlyoffice-desktop-editors-5-5-1.html In case someone cares, there is some controversy because OnlyOffice is or was developed by Ascensio System SIA, a subsidiary of "New Communication Technologies", a company from Russia. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=OnlyOffice&oldid=1116814813 https://dms-solutions.co/blog/dms-solutions-stops-doing-business-with-onlyoffice-due-to-onlyoffice-close-ties-with-russia/ As of August 2023, Onlyoffice Capital Group Pte. Ltd, a holding company from Singapore, is the main shareholder. I don't know what that means for said controversy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnlyOffice https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/05718967/filing-history https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/05718967/officers https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/05718967/persons-with-significant-control [Edit: fixed one URL]
Bummer, the reviews weren't that good. I'm not really into office software but I really don't like LibreOffice and WPS Office, so I might still check it out.
I've been playing with it for a couple of days. It's worth a look. I handles .docx files better than LibreOffice does.
I like the UI as it's not as cluttered as Microsoft or Libreoffice. If you're an infrequent, basic user it's fine. I have it installed on Kubuntu alongside Libreoffice and always use it first. Problem with Linux version is that for every new doc you have to set the language as it defaults to US English.
wow! thanks for the feedback, I like its interface more than LibreOffice. Did you figure out how to set the default font / size? The default is Arial / Size 11 and I want to change that
This path is assumed but should match on most installations... C:\Program Files\ONLYOFFICE\DesktopEditors\converter\empty\en-US\ For the document editor save the new.docx template after opening it and changing the font. It is read only. You can change that and save it (I would probably change it back to read only when done) or save it to elsewhere and copy it back over the original. If you want to keep a backup of the original that is up to you. I found this to work and should be the same for the other document types.
I discovered Only Office a few months ago and like it a lot. I don't work with a lot of Office formats, but OO has displayed all doc(x), xls(x), and ppt(x) files perfectly for me so far. (For some reason, I can't run Libre Office or Open Office -- not even the extended support versions -- on this 2016 i3 Windows 10 laptop. My guess is the outdated 2018 graphics driver that I can't update without ripping it out by the roots.)
For those on Linux (Kubuntu for me) here's how I set the default spelling to GB, and then changed the default font to Calibri 12. Move en-US to en-US1 preserve the en-US files, just in case sudo mv /opt/onlyoffice/desktopeditors/converter/empty/en-US /opt/onlyoffice/desktopeditors/converter/empty/en-US1 Copy en-GB to en-GB1 preserve the en-Gb (or your language of choice) files, just in case sudo cp -r /opt/onlyoffice/desktopeditors/converter/empty/en-GB /opt/onlyoffice/desktopeditors/converter/empty/en-GB1 Move en-GB to en-US the default open language is US, so put the files of your chosen language in the en-US folder sudo mv /opt/onlyoffice/desktopeditors/converter/empty/en-GB /opt/onlyoffice/desktopeditors/converter/empty/en-US Save new.docx (default GB spelling) with Calibri 12 (or font of your choice) to Home Copy new.docx from Home to en-US sudo mv /home/ian/new.docx /opt/onlyoffice/desktopeditors/converter/empty/en-US Not a linux expert so feel free to point out an easier way.
ONLYOFFICE 7.5.0 Release Date: Oct 17, 2023 https://www.onlyoffice.com/download-desktop.aspx Changelog: https://github.com/ONLYOFFICE/DesktopEditors/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md#750
OnlyOffice 8.0 and the Dream of a Microsoft Office Alternative It has been a long dream in the open source community to have a fully-featured alternative to MS Office. Read this excellent review of 8.0 https://fosspost.org/onlyoffice-dream-of-microsoft-office-alternative/ or not... Conclusion: A lot of work has gone into OnlyOffice, and its features are indeed very interesting among other open source office suites. However, in terms of compatibility with files produced by MS Office, there’s still some work to do.
A lot of the incompatibility in opening and saving files has to do with Microsoft Office's proprietary file formats. If it adopted open source file formats, the issue would disappear.
