I'm using HP's computers and I use their HP Image Assistant tool. I run it occasionally to check for driver updates and then download and install them as I see fit.

I use Iobit's DriverBooster with discernment. But the best I use ime is EaseUs's DriverHandy Pro. Between the two all my drivers are up to date on my ThinkPad T540p with W11P. I think it's the 1st time ever with any computer I've owned.

If I updated my sound drivers through DriverBooster it made Dolby disappear. But DriverHandy amazingly to me found the most up to date Dolby.

It's important to note that unless you are having issues with a specific device, have some devices showing missing drivers in Device Manager, or have some generic Microsoft drivers you want to replace with the proper OEM ones, there's usually no need to keep drivers updated. Having outdated drivers, for the most part doesn't matter at all. In spite of what you may read online, drivers don't start causing problems if they are outdated. There are two exceptions to what I said about outdated drivers. Video driver updates often lead to increased performance, particularly for graphic intensive tasks like gaming. The second exception is that occasionally new drivers fix security vulnerabilities. The best starting point is to use the update tools provided by your PC manufacturer. Examples of these are Dell Update, Dell Command Update, Dell SupportAssist, HP Support Assistant, HP Image Assistant and Lenovo Vantage. If these tools don't find any updates and you're not experiencing issues with any devices, I wouldn't look any further. While as mentioned, you don't need to keep drivers updated, I think it's worthwhile using these tools. As well as checking for driver updates, these tools also check for BIOS and firmware updates. Driver are provided as optional updates when they have the potential to cause problems. But in my experience, it should be rare to have issues and it's worth noting that it's much more common to have issues when using third party driver update tools.

If you don't have any update tool provided by your PC manufacturer, or the update tool does not support the version of Windows you are using here are some suggestions. The first place to look for driver updates is Windows Update. Windows Update in Windows 11 and recent builds of Windows 10 include an Optional updates section. Often you will find some driver or firmware updates there. There's no need to install every update found. Just install updates for devices that are missing drivers, only have generic drivers installed, or you are having issues with. Aside from providing updates for devices which have the needed driver installed, often you can find drivers there for devices which are missing drivers, or only have generic Microsoft drivers installed.

If you can't find the needed drivers in Windows Update, there are two driver update tools I recommend, Smart Driver Updater and Driver Easy. They both can be used for free, but with some limitations. I've used pretty much every driver updater ever published and prefer these to others, as they do there best to find the drivers released by computer manufacturer, rather than the standard OEM drivers, as explained in the following link.
    https://www.drivereasy.com/another-product-updates-more-drivers-than-driver-easy-why/
Smart Driver Updates used the same approach.

I prefer to use Windows Update before using third party driver updaters, as Windows does a very good job of finding the correct drivers.

If anyone wants steps to take to get all the needed drivers installed on a fresh install of Windows, let me know and I can provide details. For example, on Dell business computers, Dell Command Update has the option to download and install all the drivers Dell provides for that computer.

That's because it installed the standard OEM driver, rather than the custom one released by Lenovo. To update drivers on a Lenovo computer, I recommend using Lenovo Vantage or Commercial Vantage. Both of these are available in the Microsoft Store. I prefer Commercial Vantage, as Vantage contains ads for Lenovo services. Commercial Vantage has less features, but finds the same updates.
I use that too on HP computers, as well as HP Support Assistant. There are some driver updates Support Assistant finds, that Image Assistant misses and vice versa.

windows 10/11 is handling new drivers with the update process (option set). so i dont care and currently anything is running perfect.

this is different from newer program versions, thats why Kyle has DUMo and SUMo.

    newer drivers need backup!

I currently have Lenovo Vantage installed. When I attempted to install Commercial Vantage (I never heard of it until you mentioned it), it indicated that Lenovo Vantage could not also be installed. I stopped at that point. Do you have both installed?

Basically, Windows Update and my notebook manufacturer tools. Graphics drivers will just check for updates automatically anyway.

All my hardware except the graphics card is obsolete now, no further drivers or firmware. No legacy devices either. I do have Windows Updates configured to allow driver updates, though.

Since I am a regular patron on other forums that have NVIDIA downloads available on their sites, I use that to check for updates. Generally, there's no mad rush anyway as most of the updates are game-related. :)

Edit: for other general software, I use RuckZuck. It even found an update for the WebView 2 runtime (I don't have Edge browser on here). Installed it also. No nags for donations either.

I guess if you know your hardware and limit what software you install, you can get by with minimal programs for that.

It would seem that you can only have one installed. There's no need to have both installed anyway, as they both do essentially the same job. If you don't like the ads and notifications from Vantage, I'd recommend replacing it with Commercial Vantage. If you don't mind them, there's no need to change.
It's probably best to install it from the Microsoft Store. An alternative, is Lenovo System Update. It will find the same updates that Vantage does. It is not available in the MS Store.

I also never check if my drivers are updated, as long if everything works, who cares? What's also worth mentioning is that you have OS drivers that are related to hardware, and drivers related to for example security or system monitoring software. The latter are of course updated by simply installing a new version of a certain app.

In some rare cases a third-party driver updater may be useful. In my case, it was after upgrading to Win 10 from Win 8 that the Win update process didn't update all the drivers and instead IObit did.

the point is w11 and w10 , sometime do download the wrong drivers , and it's hard to remove , device manager doesn't remove drivers

thats the most used reason to install from scratch.
sure it does, and in most cases it works. but you should not restart. and if restart, enter debug mode ("F8"). install the correct drivers and start over into normal mode again.
anyhow the windows delivered drivers all have 2006 as year, so any other driver can be installed over it because of this very old date, thats a reason why ms did this way, to allow different or newer drivers.

While it certainly happens, it is very rare for Windows to install the wrong driver. If you view the details of a driver in Device Manager, you are given the option to Roll Back to the previously installed driver.
