Bitdefender update schedule?

    Hi there,

Recently I uninstalled Kaspersky Premium and I'm now testing other solutions. I'm currently trying Bitdefender Internet Security and I'm loving it.
I have a question about updates: does your BD update on a regular schedule at all? Like exactly every hour. Mine doesn't. I get updates every 3 to 6 hours, which seems weird since it's set to update very hour.
This is a fresh install of Windows 11 Pro with the "WinDebloatTools" script ran (only 'OptimizePrivacy', 'RemoveBloatwareApps', and 'RemoveXBox' were run), and 'O&O Shutup 10'.
On my previous install, Kaspersky just wouldn't automatically update. Later I discovered that it doesn't like when I set my Ethernet connection as Metered. Right now it's not as metered, so that can't by why Bitdefender isn't updating every hour.

So, how often does your Bitdefender client update?

You can only update when there are updates.
You can make any scheduled settings to check for updates, but that doesn't mean there's anything to download, and if there's nothing to download, there's nothing to install.
For years, no antivirus manufacturer provides new definitions more than once a day, and all antivirus programs generally search for them every time they start.
But as far as I understand you have Windows 11 which doesn't need any third party antivirus (read: add spyware).
And another observation, you said you uninstalled Kaspersky. If so, then there is also a crying need to do a completely new and clean OS installation, because otherwise you will never get rid of the changes made by Kaspersky on your computer.
So, start with a clean install of Windows and don't install unnecessary junk and spyware at all.
You don't need them and they won't help you, no matter how beautifully they lie to you!

Thanks. I remember reading about Avast (in their forums) and how they "stream" updates as soon as they're ready from their labs, so you can get updates every few minutes.
Perhaps some companies release their updates much more frequently than others.

It's not that Defender is terrible, but it doesn't offer me the control I want, specifically in the firewall department.
I also remember seeing on av-comparatives just how bad Defender is when your connection is out (only detecting ~69% of threats). In comparison, Kasperky detected 84.7%, and Bitdefender 93.8%.

    Already did ;-)
I use NVMe's so I just did a "SecureErase" on it.

I have BitDefender Total Security on W11 Pro. I don't trust anything else.

You can disable Metered mode in K.: https://support.kaspersky.com/help/Kaspersky/Win21.15/en-US/201001.htm

You can set also K. signatures updates every hour.

Additionally, You can disable Battery Saver is You are in laptop and still want K. updates signatures in battery mode:

@harlan4096 The only reason I'm not using kaspersky is because it makes Explorer freeze for me. I have a storage HDD (4TB) and Explorer freezes whenever I browse through the folders. This happens on first install, then after rebooting as well, and also after sleeping. If it was some sort of cache I wouldn't mind it the first time I open the folders, but it happens constantly.
This only really happens with Kaspersky.
It's a brand new drive, S.M.A.R.T reports the drive as fine.

Do you really want to claim that you have the OP system also the same 4TB on the same partition where you keep the saved files? If so, I won't be surprised by anything at all.
Instead, I hold my head with both hands.

@kaljukass No. My storage configuration is as follows:
    - Windows drive (C) = 512 GB NVMe - to start Windows and the programs I work with (such as Maya);
    - Work drive (Q) = 2 TB NVMe - for work-related files, they can be big;
    - Storage drive (P) = 4 TB HDD - general storage, e.g. when I'm done with a file from the Q: NVMe I store it here.

It's when navigating this 4 TB HDD with Kaspersky that Explorer freezes. I've tried everything, I copied the files to another drive, then do a Zero-Fill on it, then recreate the partitions and put the data back in... doesn't help. Linux works fine, Windows + [avast/eset/bitdefender/etc] work fine....
It's sad because I really wanted to use Kaspersky, I'd just bought another year of subscription. It just got in my nerves ;-)

    Anways, back on topic.

But why do you need to regularly scan this storage space (4TB HDD) and especially at the same time while you are working on the computer?
Or you don't check the downloads in real time? Or why do you do so?

I don't need to regularly scan this drive. As I previously wrote, the problem happens by simply browsing through the folders.

Then the reason is in something else, but what it is, I can't think of or guess at the moment, too little information about this system.
    But something is wrong there.

I went over my connections and realized the SATA cable was a bit "compressed", I guess (don't know how else to describe it).
I changed the cable and it seems to have done it :argh:
So now I'm back on Kaspersky. I just love this product.
I'm just curious as to why this only happened with Kaspersky. Transfer rates on this drive were always absolutely normal (~150 MB/s sustained).

Thanks! So mine was behaving properly, then.

I really liked how the UI looks and how light it is on resources, but I found Bitdefender to be extremely limiting in the amount of control it gave me, like how I can't edit some settings unless I'm logged in as Admin, or how all the settings are extremely basic/simplistic and you just can't go deep and dial exactly what I want.

For instance, Firewall requests on BD are just "allow or deny". Meanwhile in Kaspersky: https://imgur.com/a/7tBxPCg
But the entire program's settings just goes far deeper on Kaspersky, which I personally like.

Kaspersky is also much cheaper. I bought a 1-year license of the Plus edition and got their unlimited VPN in the deal, all for like 12 dollars.
And it comes with many useful features, like router/network monitoring, weak settings scan, startup apps customization, unused files and broken registry keys scan, app updater, duplicate files scan, unused programss can, large files scan, NVMe/SSD/HDD health monitoring, "Current Activity" which is like a beefed-up task manager, data leak checker, a private browser, password manager, webcam and mic control, stalker detection, violation control, etc..

But what really solidified me not staying with Bitdefender were the numerous people saying it's near impossible to cancel the auto-renewal. That just doesn't fly with me.

I bought a 5yr/5 users for $54. Then I've added a couple 1yr/5 users for $9.99. And BitDefender has 24/7 free technical support for license holders 954-414-9655. They speak perfect English (from Romania) & are highly technically skilled. I once was running a rooting program on Android & BD flagged it. I reported it was safe & 2 weeks later it was cleared. Excellent service.
