So Ubuntu is being paid by M$ to betray it's original Mission. Was it's original Mission to surpass M$ in users or what?
Since ‘Barbara’ and more importantly ‘Cassandra’ Mint was promoted as being what Ubuntu should have been and it achieved that instantly albeit with their adoption of the Cinnamon DE there was a definite need for the ‘restart Cinnamon’ button. Since then however Cinnamon has advanced to become a production level DE and the problem Mint has is that no one else does this better including LMDE. A lot of other distros including LMDE all perform the same but Mint has a real edge even if in some cases it’s just aesthetic. My guess and hope is if Mint choose to devote more time and resources to the Debian edition we might end up with a true equal and thus making any future departure from Ubuntu more acceptable.
I am using Zorin distro, It is largely based on Ubuntu This thread jangled me. By moving to Linux, I thought I was DONE with Microsoft and its machinations. But here they are again, like a bad case of toenail fungus. So... someone please suggest what -- if anything -- I should do about this. Is there any distro that won't sell its soul to the devil?
They are importing Debian packages, but: 1. Build most common packages (Linux kernel, C library) on their own, especially those available by default 2. Create package sets and configurations that are different from Debian for many packages, especially available Out of Box by default 3. Create their own tools (for package upgrades, in the past at least), that are not part of Debian recommended update/upgrade process, 4. Canonical/Ubuntu provide their own repositories, so there is no direct dependency to Debian repositories even for packages imported without modifications from Debian Long story short: a lot of things is imported from Debian, but Ubuntu is separate distribution. With Snaps becoming a default version for many popular apps gap between those distributions is growing even more
Best option is to consider one of the truly independents. A few things to bear in mind although these shouldn’t all be viewed as negatives. An odd ball distro is likely to give you an odd ball experience and there will in some cases be a learning curve outside of the usual Linux norm – think Void. There’s also likely to be less software choice although the basics will be adequately catered for and the rest likely covered by Flatpak – think Solus. Desktop choice is also likely to be limited or even non existent outside of the default – think KaOS. The dev team will inevitably be small of even just a single person. As I said earlier though not necessarily a negative since I’ve had great service from the openmamba dev about a personal need which was sorted and uploaded to their site in less than 48 hours. ALT and Rosa have most bases covered if the Russian roots don’t bother you and then there’s PCLinuxOS which has been around for ever. If I had to recommend one for speed, stability, support and ease of use it would be Solus KDE.
I think I've heard of that. I thought Debian was originally difficult to run, which is why Ubuntu was initially developed.
LMDE is a fall back option for Mint, in case things go south with Ubuntu. But it's still a full fledged and stable Distro in its own right.
MX Linux also is Debian based (no Ubuntu), right? Further, MX Linux uses init instead of systemd, right?
https://mxlinux.org/about-us/ MX Linux is based on Debian (LTS) and antiX, Zorin is based on Debian, Ubuntu (LTS) bellgamin, you should probably just use the Distro you enjoy the most and are most comfortable with, and don't let the controversial news and opinions on any of them concern you. You might even get caught up in the joy of Distro hopping. MX-21 was my favorite for months, until I tried openSUSE Tumbleweed, and now it has become my new favorite daily driver
Are we talking about which distros have snapd preinstalled vs those that don't? Afaik snapd is not installed on Debian.
That list is outdated. All Ubuntu flavours have Snap installed and Firefox Snap. It's been so since at least 22.04.
