Agreed, Wilders is "Top shelf" in this area of forum organization. Same here, he goes in depth on a technical level
Sorry guys, I sometimes can't help myself. And thanks for your comments T-RHex and wat0114. And like I said, I really don't think forum policies are the problem, but times have simply changed. There are less people interesed in IT security, and less cool new protection tools, at least when it comes to home user PC's.
Same here. I especially find from my transition from malware destruction & prevention to backup imaging & restoration of immense interest and valuable. Absolutely way more in Wilders Security Forum than any other, and globally at that.
I had been a long-time "lurker" before I joined Wilders a couple of years ago. When I first arrived here about twenty years ago, I thought Wilders was an ESET fanboy forum. I didn't like ESET Wilders Security Forums in 2003, but I do like it in 2023. Wilders has been my go-to security forum for a couple years. On a side note: Thanks to the Mods and Admins who do a great job here.
Nothing's wrong with ESET, nothing at all, but there were so many ESET posts here which led me to think that this was some kind of an ESET forum.
I always check daily on here to look for interesting discussions/articles, checking the recent activity on the main page. Most days its from yesterday, nothing new. I think the last really active discussion I found on here was this one, sadly its still the same. It seems nothing has changed. I've been here since 90s and have never known it so bleak and quiet. It can't be the general state of tech forum as others seem to still be thriving. Something needs to change.
I don't think people are less interested, I think it is just less interesting. Most of the current products belong to the same company. Nothing new and exciting has come out in a while. Norton has been on version 22 for a decade or so. There just isn't anything to talk about.
Hi, We had more dedicated forums long ago. Some here may remember them. If you scroll down on the main page, you will see "Archived Forums". That is now history ...
Twice in this thread now, Wilders staff have set out their explanations for the apparent decline in forum activity here. Both times I was surprised to see that they mentioned Covid-19 as one of the reasons for this decline. How does the logic work? Given that the lockdowns had left everybody stuck at home, with little to do but surf the Web, one would think that if anything, the response to Covid-19 should have increased forum activity, not decreased it?
In other online hobbies I've seen a similar trend post-covid. Perhaps it wasn't the trend during covid but in the aftermath, as people grew tired of sitting in front of screens for 3 years and are now getting out more, socializing in-person more, and are generally spending more time away from home?
That does sound plausible, thanks. Maybe, when they decide they've made up enough for the isolation, over time people will settle back into their pre-2020 patterns and traffic on Wilders will start climbing again.
I have doubts that will happen passively. There will need to be some content to lure them here. And no, I can't tell you what that would be. It probably won't be any AV tests. Everyone passes them all now.
What happened to Wilders was mostly that Windows protection got competent, since then this fora has declined. And, that a lot of old time Wilders users do not bother that much any more about security, specifically. If this fora is to survive, it has to change, something i would rather see then it`s death. Since the security aspect is not that important as it was when this fora started, a name change is appropriate. Wilders It & Security forum could suffice. It - before security since this gives a broader perspective and puts the security part in second. And with that a rearrangement of the forums and adding some new, as well as remove some old. Another change would be to losen up some rules, but at the same time tighten them. For instance, users must have the possibility to compare things, just as in real life communication, and list threads should be accepted. Comparison is part of discussing products, without it, discussion gets to barred. To avoid problems due to this, the rules have to be tightened so as to make it clear to users how to behave and what the consequences are when not. If moderators do not like mentioned changes, i think it is the moderators that are the problem. One can not be that tender so as to not risk conflicts, tolerate life, that is unfortunately part of life and something one has to deal with. The use of likings in form of thumbs up, down, happy faces, trophys, cake, etc etc, should be implemented. One dimension that is missing when communicating in text form, only, is the "lifelike" action, which is base for a lot of misunderstandings, besides that to many take things overly serious. To compensate for the missing life, mentioned responses should be allowed. Besides, sometimes one do not want to, or have the time to write something, but a thumbs up about something someone else has writen, will suffice. This will make a thread more "alive", in general, when one sees how much more life it is in the thread, besides posted text comments.
Exactly. I fully agree. I mentioned this before don't remember where. Besides it will prevent excess of Thanking posts (posts dedicated only to give thanks to someone) scattered all over the boards. Also more people could thank or like a post without bloating a thread with useless thanking posts. No need to implement Dislike or Angry or Haha buttons, just a Like and Thanks buttons. That's it.
..."just a Like and Thanks buttons. That's it." But, we have had this for years, here. I hate 'like and dislike like buttons', as per YouTube. These days it is only likes that are shown at YouTube. P.S. I had to find a substitute for a 'thumbs down' button. I don't think Wilders security has a selection for one of those, or maybe, I just couldn't find it. P.P.S. The thumbs down that I found has disappeared. Not to worry.
I agree, there are many times I'd like to give someone a like or a thinks but don't want to add a post just for that. Unfortunately I think it unlikely that it will be implemented.
