    I really don't understand why so many devices today request, or require internet access. Why do fridges, dishwashers, water heaters etc need internet access? [rhetorical question]

    ... But, I do realise there's no going back now.

    Seems pointless to me also but as you say it's proliferated into all sorts of household devices.
    Even pressing clothes like slacks/shirts with an iron. :argh:

    It's all part of the "smart home" automation. Smart home devices connect to your Wi-Fi network and can be managed from anywhere.
    Open your garage door or turn on the home heating/cooling with your phone app - the possibilities are endless.

    The big problem is that the security nightmare is also endless.
