I think this laissez-faire attitude from MS towards orphaned files and registry entries is due to the awareness that even entry level computers have a lot of CPU power, RAM, and large drives compared to what were the standards 15 years ago. Useless files and folders won’t slow down computers or take too much space…

Windows never ceases to amaze me ... my LCU folder takes up a whopping 1.92 GB with 195,168 files and 78,853 folders.

I created a CLU folder cleanup task in Privacy Eraser so I can forget about it for good.

Thanks @Raza0007 and @stapp for enlightening me.

EDIT 1: If there are other orphaned/remnant Win folders/files that can be safely deleted, let me know, please.

EDIT 2: Maybe we could have a dedicated thread for better clarity (?).

Note that I used Storage cleanup on temp files first which deleted three quarters of the files.

For those unused to Storage clean up of temp files there is no need to have it turned on. Just go to Start/Settings/System/Storage then wait a few seconds for the slide numbers to populate then just click on where it says temporary files.

Thanks, I know, I regularly use Disk cleanup including system files which is in fact the same what you get from Start/Settings/System/Storage. However I meant some "hidden" folders/files like the ones discussed here recently (CLU, Provisioning).

I do that regularly, especially after updates.
But I currently have two 'Package_For_RollupFix_...' folders in there taking up 1.89 GB (2.16 GB on disk).
At very least the older one should go!

If you use imaging instead of rolling back Win updates, you can wipe out them all.

    Sure.
It would be interesting if there are any other obvious contenders. Unlike the tw_*.tmp files, these Package files take up GBs.

Mine says 2.88 GB, 292,245 files, 117,986 folders. On Windows 10. Windows 11 does not seem to have this folder.

This folder -LCU- doesn't seem to exist on my system, maybe different location...

Yeah, disk cleanup doesn't touch the LCU folder; one has to do it manually.

I never had the LCU folder in Windows 11--don't think it exists on that OS.

I've just checked my old Win 10 computer, and the LCU folder is definitely there. It had about 4 GB of stuff, and after using Windows Disk Cleanup there was about 1 GB... I left it there as there might be a reason for not deleting it. Windows seems to be whimsical/inaccurate about deleting useless files, but having large empty drives I'd rather play it safe when deleting stuff.

This is good news! They finally managed to get rid of a folder that should not have existed in the first place! If they can fix it in Win 11, I wonder what is stopping them from fixing it in Win 10. It has been around for a long time. All they have to do it to enable it to be fully deleted with the Windows update cleanup.

Most likely cheap storage was the main reason. These kind of junk files and folders don't reduce PC performance directly, maybe a little during indexing, they just sit there taking up space. And a lot of people had plenty of extra space available in the last two decades. It is only due to the advent of tablets with limited non expandable storage that MS has started looking into trimming their OS.

Absolutely. Even though I don't delete files from inside my Windows directory, I usually keep a close watch on them to make sure they don't get out of hand. These were the two locations I remember off hand, but if I encounter any more or remember any other, I will definitely let you know.

I'm still using the disk cleanup option.
Is there any difference between disk cleanup and storage sense cleanup?

I'm used to using Disk Cleanup since the early Win versions. If I compared the files offered for cleanup from Disk Cleanup and from Start/Settings/System/Storage, I got the same amount, so it can be concluded that there is no difference between the two. I read somewhere that Disk Cleanup will one day be replaced by Storage Sense.

Thanks! You know, I like it tidy but reasonably, so no-harm-proven cleaning is fine. :)

I too have about 200.000 files in there.

I remember OneDrive storing thousands of installers in a folder for updates even if you don't use it. Can't find the thread right now though. But maybe it is indeed better to start a separate thread about this.

Sorry but as I stated in a previous post this does exist in Windows 11 but it is hidden. File explorer kept telling me this path didn't exist until I disabled the task that creates the folders and then they appeared. Weird that disabling a task would unhide it but that is what happened.
