    I have chosen not to use Win 10 or Win 11 (don't ask). Instead I have stayed with Win7. I am also a Linux user.

    As you may have heard, the main browser versions will cease to support Win7 -- some of them may already have done so. Of course I can keep using older browser versions that work okay on Win7 but this will leave me out of any browser updates issued for the purpose of protecting against nasties.

    I presently switch back & forth between 2 solutions:
    (1) While using Win7, I surf the web using Shadow Defender (see NOTE below).
    (2) While using Linux -- NO problem because Linux browsers are updated.

    REQUEST: Please keep an eye open -- if you hear of a browser that will continue to support Win7 with latest browser updates, let me know. (I will very much appreciate any & all comments & suggestions.)

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    NOTE: While on the internet, Shadow Defender runs my system in a virtual environment called Shadow Mode.
    Shadow Mode redirects all system changes to a virtual computer, with NO change to my real computer. All such changes disappear upon restart or reboot, except when I take special action to retain them.
    I seems that Brave still supports Windows 7.
    you overrate the purpose of shadow defender. it does not protect from working attacks, a vulnerable and compromised browser is not protected this way. browser attacks are for real and used. same for windows, you can reset your windows with SD, but it does not protect your windows from upcoming attacks while running. i dont know why users always think they can use windows 7 after eol because they install a lot of security crap. seriously.
    the only updated browser until aug'23, maybe with some luck because of win8 embedded is aug'24, is firefox.
    PS about brave, they obviously will remove the lock, but who knows if they wont lift chromium on another level which is not compatible to win7. MS already disabled some software packages for win7.
    some indirect message said that mozilla wont abandon windows 7 before 115 esr. so this could mean with -> 2023 is the end, or after -> 2024. rice bag fallen, situation unclear. ^^
    ofc other producers hope that users will switch to their build when chrome and edge have an end.
    You should probably stick with Linux.
    @Brummelchen -- My laptop has a handy internet-on/off switch on its main deck. I boot with it off & only turn it on when in Shadow mode.
    Whatever happens in Shadow mode totally disappears after re-boot. I installed Win7 just a few months after it was released. Over the years since then, I have had only one infection -- whether by luck or whatever -- only ONE.
    In the highly unlikely event that something slips by Shadow mode, I will simply restore a clean image. POOF!
    I use my computer for enjoyment. I enjoy Win7 & will keep using it until I find something I like better. Win10 & Win11 do not meet that criterion. Them's the facts. Deal with it! :p
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    @monkeylove -- I'm making real progress with Zorin Pro Linux. I have it set up so that it works 99.44% like Win7. That being the case, why not drop Win7? Well, there are several of my favorite apps that run on Win7 for which I have *not yet* found Linux equivalents. These include my 2 favorite solitaire games, plus a great macro writer, plus R-Drive Image, & several other old friends.

    @Sampei Nihira -- catsxp download showed as 2.5GB. Not MB -- GB!! Estimated download time was 1-2 hours. Documentation is in Chinese. Fascinating! But not my cup of tea, wot.

    W7P64 here. I'm setting up SLOWLY browser Pale Moon. Afaik Pale Moon has no plans to abandon W7. Only browser I tried that recognized Vivaldi's exported bookmarks. But I'm hanging on to Vivaldi as long as I can.

    bellgamin, you missed again that shadow defender cleans up afterwards, but can NOT prevent intrusion while using your windows.

    pale crap has to be slow with a single process and an ancient goanna & javascript engine.

    @Brummelchen -- Pale Moon moves along zippy on my aging laptop. If it's slow for you, maybe your cpu needs vitamins? :p

    Shadow mode allows VIRTUAL intrusions against a VIRTUAL computer -- Not my real computer. It's like a video game of Las Vegas Casino. Even if my alter ego wins $5,000,000 in the game, I still can't afford a brand new Ferrari in the real world.

    There are NO permanent effects while in Shadow Mode.

    wrong again. PM has a single process to perform all (!) of its actions, firefox is multi-threaded and performs on 8 cores here. guess whats faster here as palecrap need to run a pipe (single by single) with instructions. technically firefox performs much faster and safer. child processes with "low" or "untrusted" integrity while palecrap is running user rights (in bad case admin rights). if palecrap crashes the whole browser crashes, firefox resists!
    i wasnt talking about this.
    i owe you respect for your age, but some things really changed.

    @Brummelchen -- My point: No matter which OS is used, internet-inflicted infections won't be permanent or problematical if all connections are done via a virtual computer.

    As for change: not all technology advances are for the better -- nuclear weapons, for example.

    If you use Shadow Defender and reboot all changes are gone---How about adding Sandboxie. For as long as I can remember anytime Microsoft update to a new Os the update drums start pounding, Like Bellgamin I have used old Software and nothing has ever happened. The emphasis should be on support and service not selling new Computers and Operating systems. If you have a perfect functioning computer why should you have buy new software everytime Microsoft wags its tail

    @bellgamin, you may want to check out LibreWolf. That's what I've just started to use on my Win7 desktop (along with the security apps in my sig).

    You quoted, "Make the shortcut to chrome.exe with -- no sandbox." Exactly which comment are you quoting? I couldn't find it.

    @pvsurfer -- Thanks for the suggestion. I gave LibreWolf a trial & found that it has disabled the dark theme option. I enjoy Firefox's dark theme -- much easier on the eyes.
