If you can turn those notifications off, I'm interested again. The thing is, after the Avast debacle, I don't trust any of the free AV's anymore, especially now that AV's are depending on the cloud so much. Who knows what data they upload from your machine. This is of course also a problem with WD, but I'm sure Windows can also use other system processes to exfiltrate data.

This is sometimes indeed a problem with WD, it seems to scan stuff that it shouldn't be, like picture files. Plus it scan files over and over again, very annoying with folders with a lot of apps.

BTW, do you get the sandbox feature with Avast One and Avast Free? I did get to see it being bypassed on YouTube, so it's probably not as good as Sandboxie.

It is here, in the Settings menu. You can turn off or on the notifications and recommendations and not see any special offers from BD. I left mine on and still have not seen any warning or notification windows since the first day I installed BD Free.

I don't believe the Avast Free or One AV's have a sand box. The Avast Secure Browser has Bank Mode which works in what Avast calls an isolated mode or something like that. That may be a sandbox, Avast says that "no one else can see what you are doing" when you use it. It is intended to use on financial sites or other sensitive sites.

    Hi,
Hope this help someone out, below:

    Avast Premium Security
has a Sand Box. Focuses more on
    Security.
But, Avast One Free or Avast One Paid, does not have a Sand Box.
    Focuses more on cleaning.

OK cool thanks, I might give Bitdefender Free a try. And perhaps the sandbox is only available in the Avast Pro version.

I forgot to add that if you go to

    https://usa.kaspersky.com/free-antivirus

you will see the free antivirus instead of free security cloud. I installed the latter to test it a few weeks ago, and a few days later was automatically switched to the free antivirus.

    According to the links above,

BD free (drop-down "Windows Protection") has no "Network Threat Prevention", "Multi-Layer Ransomware Protection", "Rescue Environment", etc. Kaspersky free has no "Existing Virus Removal".

Given that, I think Avast is the most complete, but I'm not sure.

Thanks, but I'm not that bothered that BD Free doesn't have all the features since I'm already using AppCheck for ransomware protection. What is important is that BD Free does have the behavior blocker, which is probably more advanced than the one in Win Defender.

Avast One does not see your network printer initially and you must do a number of firewall adjustments to recognize it. Real deal killer.

    Will not install again.

In my case, I don't use AppCheck, which I think isn't free, and if I'm able to pay for software, then I'd use security suites that include ransomware protection.

I found it heavier than Avast Free, and can't disable or uninstall features not needed, like the firewall and VPN.

No, AppCheck also has a free version which has most important protection features. It even has a YouTube channel where it showcases how many ransomware samples it can actually block. I believe it uses both signatures and behavioral blocking. Of course with these kind of tools you must never expect a 100% detection rate, but same goes for AV's. But anyway, Avast Free and Avast One look too bloated to me, I believe Avira Free and Bitdefender Free are probably better choices. I don't know if Avira will still nag you though.

Yes, it's that one. The only thing I don't like is that they recently changed the GUI of the free version, it doesn't look that good anymore. But normally you won't be looking at it that much. It also offers exploit protection but I have no idea how it actually works, so I wouldn't rely on it. I'm also not sure about AppCheck's Cleaner component, it's probably not that advanced.

I need to rescind my recommendation as something is very wrong with WVSX support of late! Since I had not received any updates whatsoever over the past 3 weeks (those were a regular daily occurrence), I switched to Bitdefender Free and it's running unobtrusively. :thumb:

I'm also thinking about switching to Bitdefender Free. I never understood all the hype about WiseVector, when I checked it out, it gave a couple of dumb false positives and I also wasn't impressed with the HIPS.

As the OP of this thread and having decided on BD Free (instead of Avast's/Kaspersky's Free products) this thread has served its purpose. Thanks to all.
