Aim Is International Cooperation in Fight Against Digital Extortion

A global ransomware task force led by Australia and comprised of 37 like-minded governments commenced operations Monday with the aim of sharing intelligence to stymie future digital extortion attacks.

The task force is an outgrowth of the U.S.-led Counter Ransomware Initiative, which last met in November at the White House (see: White House Ransomware Confab Ends With Data-Sharing Pledge).

The task force aims to foster collaboration in global law enforcement agencies and cybersecurity authorities. In addition to swapping intelligence, it will share best practices policy and legal authority frameworks.

Home Affairs: Australia leads global task force to fight ransomware

Australia will today commence the operations of the International Counter Ransomware Task Force to combat the scourge of ransomware. The Task Force sits under the US-led Counter Ransomware Initiative, comprised of 37 like-minded governments.

Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security the Hon. Clare O’Neil said the Task Force will enable sustained and impactful international collaboration, designed to disrupt, combat and defend against the increasing ransomware threat and called on other countries to join the collective effort.

“Ransomware represents a significant global threat, and Australia will continue to play a leading role working with international partners, industry and the community to develop effective responses to combat cyber criminals and protect our people and institutions,” Minister O’Neil said.

International Counter Ransomware Task Force kicks off

An international counter-ransomware task force first announced at a White House event in November officially commenced operations on Monday, according to the Australian government which is the inaugural chair of the group.

The International Counter Ransomware Task Force’s (ICRTF) operations are intended to drive collaboration among a coalition of 36 member states and the European Union to counter the spread and impact of ransomware which, despite typically being a criminal rather than state-based activity, has become a significant national security threat in recent years.

The ICRTF was announced by members of the Counter Ransomware Initiative (CRI) after the conclusion of a two-day conference hosted by the Biden administration.
ICRTF members have committed to “joint action in the fields of resilience, disruption, and countering illicit finance,” the White House announcement said.
