Microsoft is rebranding 'Office' to Microsoft 365

After 32 years, Microsoft has begun to kill off the Microsoft Office brand, with plans to rebrand its Office.com and Office cloud-based apps to Microsoft 365 in the near future.

In 2020, Microsoft rebranded Office 365 to Microsoft 365 and started to heavily push the subscription-based productivity suite to both the enterprise and consumers.

Office is rebranding to Microsoft 365
Yesterday, Microsoft announced that all their cloud-based Microsoft Office apps and the office.com site would be rebranding to Microsoft 365 soon.

The rebrand would start with Office.com in November 2022, followed by Microsoft's free cloud-based versions, the Office app on Windows and Office mobile app, in January 2023.

However, this does not mean that the Microsoft Office brand is going away completely.
Microsoft says they will continue offering the one-time purchase license via Microsoft Office 2021 and Office LTSC.

However, the mobile apps and free Microsoft Store cloud-based versions will now be renamed to Microsoft 365.

Microsoft gives us a first look at the new Microsoft 365 app

At its annual Ignite 2022 event, Microsoft announced a plethora of new features for Microsoft 365 users. But what apparently turned out to be the most exciting among consumers was the new Microsoft 365 app designed to replace the current Office application. Days after announcing, Microsoft has finally given us the first look at it.

The Microsoft 365 YouTube channel has posted a video showing some of the key features of the app. Besides showing its new look and a new icon, the video talks about how it can be a hub for all your documents, presentations, and files across all your apps, including third-party content. The video is 55 seconds long, so not everything is covered. But it highlights a good set of features.

Interestingly enough, the Office app on Google Play Store has now been renamed to "Office (Microsoft 365). As of yet, it does not offer all the new functionalities highlighted in the video.

During the announcement, Microsoft said Office.com, the Office mobile app, and the Office app for Windows will become the Microsoft 365 app "in the coming months."

Microsoft 365 Home: support for (new) personalized Outlook email addresses will be removed

Microsoft is sending out emails to Outlook customers right now that informs them that support for personalized email addresses on Outlook.com is ending at the end of November 2023.

Existing Outlook customers who have set up custom email addresses won't have the option taken away from them. These email addresses will continue to work after November 2023 just like before. New custom email addresses can't be added to Outlook.com anymore after November 30, 2023.

Up until now, Microsoft 365 Family or Personal customers could set up a personalized email address that is associated with the Outlook.com mailbox. The feature was limited to domains managed by the domain registrar and hosting provider GoDaddy.

Microsoft is removing the personalized email address feature from Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions. The email that Microsoft is sending out provides the following information about the change:

This email provides details on two apps we have recently added to your subscription, one feature we plan to remove next year, and an update to your cloud storage.

Microsoft 365 will soon cut these Outlook and OneDrive features
Your Outlook emails will soon count against your Microsoft 365 cloud storage limit.

What you need to know

Microsoft just announced several changes that will remove features or affect the functionality of Outlook and OneDrive.

Microsoft 365 subscribers will no longer be able to have personalized email addresses attached to their Outlook.com inbox.

Outlook attachments will soon count against your OneDrive storage data limit, which could force people to delete larger emails.

Microsoft will add at least 50 GB of extra storage to Outlook for one year to help people transition.

Microsoft recently announced significant changes to Outlook and OneDrive that will reduce functionality of both services in certain areas. Starting on November 30, 2023, Microsoft 365 subscribers will no longer be able to associate a new personalized email address with an Outlook.com mailbox. On February 2, 2023, Outlook.com attachments will start counting against a person's OneDrive data cap. Microsoft sent out details about the changes this morning.

The change to cloud storage will likely affect more Microsoft 365 subscribers than the personalized email change.

If you often send larger files or keep thousands of emails in your inbox, you may have to clear up some space. To help ease the transition, Microsoft will provide at least an extra 50 GB of cloud storage for one year starting on February 2, 2023. That period should give people enough time to organize their files accordingly.

Microsoft 365 Basic launches with 100 GB of storage, Outlook and more for $1.99 per month

Microsoft will introduce a new, lower-cost tier of Microsoft 365, its product family of productivity software, collaboration and cloud-based services, starting on January 30. Called Microsoft 365 Basic and priced at $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year, the plan will initially include 100 GB of storage, Outlook email, and access to support experts for help with Microsoft 365 and Windows 11.

Existing OneDrive 100 GB subscribers will be transitioned to Microsoft 365 Basic beginning January 30 as well, Microsoft says. And in the coming months, Microsoft 365 Basic plan members will get “advanced security features” like ransomware recovery and password-protected sharing links in OneDrive.

Importantly, Microsoft 365 Basic is not replacing the free Microsoft 365 tier.
That’s here to stay along with the same benefits it offers today, including access to the web-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, OneDrive, Clipchamp and more and 5 GB of cloud storage. Microsoft 365 Personal, meanwhile, will remain $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year.

To coincide with the introduction of the new tier, Microsoft today announced the general availability of the Microsoft 365 app, which replaces the Microsoft Office app with a new design and new features. As previewed earlier this year during Microsoft’s Ignite conference, the Microsoft 365 app — now live on the web — provides quick access to apps including Word, Excel and PowerPoint in addition to file templates, “smart” recommendations, to-do list functionality and syncing across different devices.

Microsoft renames Office Insider to Microsoft 365 Insider

Office Insider, a program that lets you preview Office updates before the public release, is getting a new name. Launched more than seven years ago, the program is now moving away from the Office brand and turning into the Microsoft 365 Insider program with an "expanded purview."

Microsoft announced the rename on its official insider website, which is still under the Office branding. Changing the name of the preview program is a part of Microsoft's effort to rebrand one of its most successful products into Microsoft 365, a move some users consider questionable and slightly puzzling.

Microsoft says changing the name also expands the program's purview, so expect more posts beyond traditional Office apps. Finally, all release notes have been moved to the learn.microsoft.com website. In a nutshell, the program remains same-same but different, but still same.

Finally, Microsoft reminds users that the Office brand is not going away entirely (you will see it in brackets next to Microsoft 365 in many places across operating systems). Those not wanting to purchase the Microsoft 365 subscription can still opt for a one-time purchase of Office 2021 and Office LTSC. ChromeOS and Microsoft 365 will start playing nicer with each other this year

Google says ChromeOS will add a "new integration" for Microsoft 365, making it easier to install the app and adding built-in support for OneDrive in ChromeOS' native Files app. This should allow users to search for and access OneDrive files the same way they get to local files, or files stored in their Google Drive account. The integration will be added in "the coming months," and users in ChromeOS' dev and beta channels will be able to access it before it rolls out to all ChromeOS users later this year.

ChromeOS users can currently access OneDrive and other Microsoft 365 services through their web interfaces or Android apps installed via the Google Play Store, but they don't integrate with the built-in ChromeOS Files app the way that Google Drive does. This integration will help close that gap for people who, for example, use Google products at home but Microsoft products at work or vice versa.

Google: Making it easier to access and edit your Office documents

It’s important to all Chromebook users to have the tools readily available to access the files they need to get things done. Today, users of Microsoft 365 and OneDrive software can use the Progressive Web App (Installable here) for their Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or Excel needs. To further help these users, we will have a new integration later this year on ChromeOS, making it easier to install the app and open files.

Users will be offered a guided setup experience that takes them through the process of installing the Microsoft 365 web app and connecting Microsoft OneDrive to their Chromebook Files app. Files will be moved to Microsoft OneDrive when opening in the Microsoft 365 app.

Affected users report that the nag screen is blocking access to the desktop until they agree to start a free trial of Microsoft 365 Family (which most people are still referring to as Office 365). As part of agreeing to the trial, users are asked to provide payment details, and although no charges are made until the end of the trial period, the danger is that some people will forget to cancel and will end up paying.

The issue is affecting people who are performing a clean installation of Windows 10, or installing a feature update, as part of the Windows Out of Box Experience (OOBE) which appears before the desktop is accessible.

If a user clicks No, thanks, the subsequent Confirm your payment option screen includes only a Start trial, buy later option. A video of the screen has been shared on Reddit, with the user in question saying:

"Windows 10 preventing me from booting into desktop without first non-consensually being forced to accept their free trial and $100 monthly thereafter".

There is speculation that Microsoft has inadvertently switched the behaviors of the Try for free and No, thanks buttons, but there is also speculation that the company has sneakily done it on purpose. Whatever is the case, the fact that there is not a clearly labelled (and functioning) Skip this option is a serious oversight.
