From the last sentence in quotes by @mood -- "What might get you to spend money is whether your PC is compatible with it, but that’s a different matter worthy of its own section."

Hmm -- 72GB Ram & 6.0Ghz cpu, no doubt.

Yeah, I hope they don't resort to requiring new hardware each time now. The year of Linux may come after all.

We say it, but deep in our hearts we know it will never happen.

Well we all knew it was coming on the heels of Windows 11 and they just as well start rolling out some of the incomplete releases.

Sure will save many of us from the unnecessary expenditure of effort or time throwing our good hard money at 11 only to see it's in a rear view mirror as far as Microsoft is concerned.

I'm still running 8.1 Pro, and have no intention of moving up to 10, let alone v11 or 12. At some point, on one of these versions I'm bound to have software compatibility issues. So, as long as this old laptop (2014 vintage) keeps chugging along, it will run Windows 8.1. Latest and greatest isn't always the best.

Hi there @Chuck57 - I just finished enhancing about 20 Windows 8.1 systems which means i change it's looks/icons, backdrops, and anything else in-between that looks far more professional than Microsoft could ever dream of let alone produce. And basically that's been my approach since Windows 98SE. Windows is a FRAMEWORK ONLY system to be built up and refined by software developers/artists by it's user's. Oh and then there's security which independent developers have also fixed for user security & safety. Far more efficient than the built-in gadget they taut named Windows Defender.

Other improvements are for it's maximum performance and degutting the junk wherever it it is found. Effectively taking that FRAMEWORK to a step beyond the other so-called newer releases. The only limitation is on some that are years old CPU's & Memory but to everyone's amazement i have Windows 8.1 systems that are never turned off and i do mean for years. Not even a power failure! BATTERY BACKUP! Rebooted or temporarily shut down maybe to clean, install new HDD's & Memory etc.

You just can't kill it. And some i have threw malware/ransomware/file infectors that alone tax the dickens out of CPU cycles but they just can't kill a good 8.1.

I have Windows 10 but it is been a doorstop for a year. Trying to dress that one too and update it but it will never be the productivity machine the 8.1's are.

I mostly agree but if Windows becomes a "buy a new device with each update" a lot of people couldn't keep up if they wanted to.

Seems to me I heard some rumblings about you could upgrade to Windows 12, only if you had a ssd hard drive.

Wow. I guess I'm the only one here that actually likes Windows 11. It's been rock solid for me, much more stable that 10. I like the gui tweaks better and DoH.

you are not alone, although i work on windows 10. on all of my three current machines windows 10 is usable, the smallest is 17 years old, windows 10 is low on performance, but windows 8.1 is also low. sorry, i dont believe any excuses here. excuses... ... ... !

Yes! It's mainly having OEMs like Dell, etc building machines with ssd as Windows boot drive. I suppose you could still have hdd for storage or whatever.

Nothing's solidified about that yet. But for once, I can understand the reasoning, just not the additional toxic landfill. :thumbd:

Nothing wrong with Windows 11 on here--it runs fine. I just don't like it because of all the stipulations on the user to run this mediocre operating system. It ain't all that. (my opinion) :)

Totally agree, but we all know the alternative to that.
They will just keep running the last version of Windows that their machine is capable of.
You've been here long enough to read the posts of those still using XP, let alone W7!

I don't hate Win 10, and haven't seen 11 to be able to comment. I tried Windows 10 on this machine, 3 different times - 2 upgrades and a clean install. All 3 were much, much slower than my Windows 8.1 Pro on boot and routine daily performance. And, 10 was a lot hungrier, using more RAM and CPU, etc.

Some of that might be this laptop, an HP 355G2, which is 2014 vintage. I can't upgrade to even try Win 11 because there is no TPM 2 or 1.2, and MS says the processor isn't compatible, along with one other thing I don't recall.

    I don't expect it before 2030.

There's a huge job to remove all the old legacy code and to build a completely new OS.

Microsoft doesn't want to rush out another half baked system to the market and I anticipate one or two further extensions for Windows 10.

So even if they began work after Windows 11 was released, it will take a decade before Windows 12 is ready.

You can upgrade as Microsoft lets you install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware. The following batch file can created the needed registry keys to upgrade or do a clean install.

I'm very happy with it. I had some minor issues early on, but ob whole, it has been just as stable as Windows 10. It's also noticeably faster which is nice. For the most part, I like the new UI.

True but that will get harder to do. IE is dead and Edge just got its last update on Windows 7. Firefox is still going but probably not for much longer. I'd have huge security concerns with unsupported browsers.

I wouldn't use a PC today without one. As cheap as they are it shouldn't be a roadblock for most.

Edge still updates on W7 and W8 for v109. Will probably stop at v110.

If you have a 7 installation check again, you will get a notice that there are no more updates.
