Microsoft has announced the availability of Viva Engage, the newest addition to Microsoft Viva. Viva Engage can be best described as a social media platform for people in your workplace – the way people interact isn’t too dissimilar to Facebook in that you can make posts and people can comment and react to them.

With Communities, smaller groups in the workplace can create a private section for themselves to focus on their own projects. Communities can be based on anything. They do not need to be limited to projects you’re working on, but could be used to help connect everyone in the workplace based on interests, even if they don’t normally work together.

Microsoft has announced several new improvements to Microsoft Teams that will better the experience for students and educators. In the latest update, Microsoft has added a new feature called Reflect to build students’ emotional skills and has redesigned the home page based on feedback. Educators can also create and review Reading Progress assignments on iPad and Android tablets.

In addition to Reflect, Microsoft has revamped the Teams home page to better suit educators based on feedback it has received. Through the new home page, students will be able to read the latest announcements, see pinned class resources, view their upcoming assignments, and get quick links to recently edited class files.

The home page will automatically collate assignments, virtual class meetings, and files that teachers have already started adding.
Finally, this update allows teachers to create and review Reading Progress assignments using Teams on iPad and Android tablets. Previously, teachers were limited to doing this on Teams for PC, Mac, or in the web browser.

Teams will finally allow you to leave meetings across multiple devices with “a single tap” this August

Microsoft has finally realized the Teams feature we are all yearning for in a roadmap we spotted this August on its website. According to the page, the new feature with a feature ID of 97397 is now under the general availability release phase after being added to the roadmap last August 8. Soon, it will be available for different platforms where we access Teams: desktop, web, iOS, Mac, and Android.

“When a Teams user has joined a meeting using multiple personal devices, they can encounter friction when leaving the meeting, including forgetting to leave the meeting on one of their many devices,” Microsoft describes the feature on its roadmap page. “This functionality allows Teams users to leave a meeting from all their devices with a single tap.”
The feature is anticipated to arrive before the month ends, meaning there are only a few days left before the company can finalize it.

For those unaware, Teams users in China utilize the software services through the dedicated China Premium network using the public internet. Microsoft Teams currently handles searches for messages in a way that can be awkward. When you search for text, Teams takes you to a view of your messages and any directly connected thread, but it's completely out of context. Clicking on the search result doesn't take you to where the chat was sent within a channel or conversation. That's about to change, thanks to a change that's on the way to Teams.

"When users search for a chat message in Teams and click on a message result, they are taken to a view that contains only the selected message, rather than the entire chat thread," reads an entry on the Microsoft 365 roadmap. "This fix will now land the users on the full chat thread once the message search result is clicked, thereby providing full context of the conversation around the message result."

The video conferencing service is finally addressing one of the most annoying aspects of viewing presentations online via Teams by allowing users to magnify or enlarge whichever slides they need.

For starters, Mesh avatars are now available in private preview for Teams. This is something Microsoft announced almost a year ago. Basically, Mesh enables users to utilize personalized 3D avatars that can join Teams meetings and interact with each other in an immersive space.

It has stated that Cameo for Teams is generally available, Excel Live in a Teams meeting window is coming later this month, and that organizers will have more control over the Together mode view for all participants along with the ability to assign seats.

In essence, Teams Shared Device license is a rebrand of the existing Common Area Phone (CAP) license so that it can adapt to and cover more scenarios. For those unaware, a CAP license is recommended for enterprises which use a Teams device in an area that is being actively used by multiple people, such as a lobby or a reception.

The new Teams Shared Device license will continue to offer the functionalities offered by the CAP license but also expand to address more use-cases for customers using Teams Displays and Teams Panels. Reuters has reported that the European Commission (EC) is looking to launch an investigation against Microsoft for purported anti-competitive practices related to its Teams software.

The basis for this scrutiny is a complaint filed by Slack in 2020 in which it stated that bundling Teams with the Microsoft 365 suite of products forces it to be installed on many machines while "hiding the true cost to enterprise customers". It urged the regulator to force Microsoft to remove Teams from its Microsoft 365 suite and offer it separately at "fair" commercial prices.
According to the report, the EC sent out a new set of questionnaires last month, which is a sign that it's considering ramping up its investigation against Microsoft.

Thanks to the implementation of AI, Teams will be able to detect when your conversations indicate sharing files and will surface them accordingly. Among the files shown to you, you will be able to choose the right one and send it with just one click. Although not confirmed, you should also have the option to ignore the suggestions if you think they are not helpful, exactly like how you can ignore suggested replies and type everything you want to say instead.

According to Microsoft 365 Roadmap, File suggestions for Teams chat will be available in February next year.

With the new flyout design, Microsoft is aiming to achieve better app engagement and discovery. Microsoft says it will help you "quickly launch apps that you have as well as discover new ones to help you complete your day-to-day tasks in Teams." The software giant, however, has not shared how exactly a new flyout design will help users achieve all this.

The "enhanced flyout design" in Teams will arrive in February next year for desktop users. That is what Microsoft is saying on its Roadmap page, but given its track record, you should not keep your hopes high.

Starting off with chat and collaboration improvements, we have the ability to delete chats without impacting other members of the chat, along with the option to react to specific messages with up to 800 emoji.
Finally, the resource-specific consent (RSC) permissions model has been expanded to cover chats and channels, and up to two participants can be designated for the sign language view with the ability to also enable captions across all meetings.

Over on the devices side, we have Whiteboard enhancements and Microsoft Teams Rooms on Android Update 3, which we have covered in detail here.

Microsoft is now working on 'Busy-on-busy end user setting.' The new call setting will manage how incoming calls are routed when you are busy in an existing call or meeting. In a scenario where you are busy speaking to someone else, you are allowed to choose from a couple of "busy options:" you can let the calls come through, or play a busy signal, or redirect the call.

"Busy options" are not entirely new to Microsoft Teams users. Administrators can already configure Busy-on-busy with a policy from Microsoft Teams Admin Center.
Although not confirmed, the busy-on-busy call setting will likely be set to Disabled by default.

The meeting toolbar usability improvements include a dedicated raise hand button, which means you can now raise your hands directly from the toolbar. You can also seamlessly switch between different view options from the new View button in the toolbar. Also, you can navigate the More menu easier from sub-menu groupings. Lastly, the improved toolbar now features a new react button.

Microsoft to move some Teams features to more costly 'Premium' edition

Microsoft has revealed that a Premium cut of its Teams cloudy collaborationware suite will debut in early February, and some features that are currently included in Microsoft 365 will move to the new – more costly – product.

On Tuesday, the software leviathan revealed, in a note for its partners, that the product is scheduled to become generally available in "early February 2023."

Teams Premium requires an add-on license over and above a Microsoft 365 subscription.
But as Microsoft's licensing guide clarifies: "some Teams features will move from Teams licenses to Teams Premium licenses."

Microsoft will keep those features free in vanilla Teams for 30 days once the Premium edition debuts, but after that will seek to upsell users.

The software giant has suggested Teams Premium will have an "expected list price of $10 per user per month" but will reveal the actual price only once the tool becomes generally available.

Last year, we heard that Microsoft could be the target of an antitrust probe from the European Commission (EC) due to a complaint filed by Slack regarding Teams. Now, a new report claims that this is definitely happening and that the Redmond tech giant is facing formal scrutiny soon.

A report from Politico notes that multiple EC sources have confirmed that Microsoft will be facing an antitrust probe soon regarding bundling Teams with its other Microsoft 365 software. Although the details are currently unclear, the regulator is reportedly planning a "statement of objections" regarding how Microsoft treats its competition unfairly in an anti-competitive manner. An EC spokesperson also confirmed that an assessment regarding the probe is ongoing.

For those unaware, the root of the probe is a complaint filed by Slack in 2020 in which it stated that Microsoft hides the "true cost" from enterprise customers when it bundles Teams with the Microsoft 365 suite of products and forces it to be installed on machines.
