In the referenced time period of 8 months ago or thereabouts, Orion was offered by Phrozen Software (a Chinese outfit), not Kagi (Chinese or otherwise). Also, at the time, Orion was not specifically confined to macOS and iOS. There are references to Orion by at least one other poster going back aways thanking DavidXanatos for making Sandboxie compatible with the browser. Back then, Windows was an offered platform and worked flawlessly here on Windows 10. In my previous post, I suggested that "As the potential for software updates go, maybe things have changed drastically for the better." Maybe. But your assertion that "No, macOS & iOS only" applies to the period when I downloaded and ran the browser on Windows 10 is entirely fallacious. Before I uninstalled, I did some (massive?) digging around on Google for update and release information on Orion and made the decision to uninstall accordingly. So, there you go. Google. A heck of a good search engine in the end...
Tried Google and found "Orion Browser Dumper" by Phrozen Software, but I can't find it on the Phrozen Software website (maybe discontinued?). From what I see on third-party sites it's a (Windows) tool to dump the history of the (Windows) Lunascape Orion browser. I don't know for sure, but maybe we're talking about two entirely different products (a Chrome based browser for Windows and a WebKit based browser for macOS/iOS) that share the same name (Orion)? EDIT: It actually looks like that browser is called Lunascape, with a Windows build called "Lunascape Orion" and a macOS build called "Lunascape Phoebe"?
@Moose World Swisscows, similar to the default settings of Startpage, will censor certain inquiries in an effort to be family friendly. I'm not a fan of a search engine that takes such liberties; but there's a huge crowd out there that appreciates that and with good reason. It's been a while since I've used Swisscows. The search results were admirable in terms of quantity and quality. No comment on how "private" Swisscows actually is. IMO, if one were pressed to pick Swisscows over DDG, MetaGer, SearX, Gibiru (never mind the search results GUI that lacks the pretty polish), or Qwant; Swisscows would fall a bit short in the line up. A search engine best filed under and being remembered for as "generic." As always, YMMV.
Presearch seemed to give really clean and relevant results... they have some kind of token rewards system which I opted out of.
Thanks for this link. The test has an understandably too-small sample size to be totally decisive. However, it does offer a basis for my keeping an *slightly* open mind re Yandex.
Hmmm........ thanks to @Moose World I gave https://gibiru.com/ a more extensive trial. My findings: Gibiru has been active as a search engine since 2009. Gibiru promises "Uncensored Private Search" and "We don’t log your searches, IP address or place cookies on your computer. This means there is no data to sell to advertisers or to use to retarget you." Gibiru search results are selectable to 4 categories: (1) Web, (2) Images, (3) Videos, & (4) News. The "Web" search category covers the *usual* all-encompassing search. The other 3 types of searches are specialized to the types of "finds" indicated. User-selectable search results can be either "All Results" (the *usual* all-encompassing search) or "Censored Content" -- default is "All Results." I couldn't figure out which search engines Gibiru uses but its search results are fully equal to those of MetaGer, DuckDuckGo, etc. Its results page is excellent & easy on the eyes. I'm going to stay with Gibiru for now. If anyone else tries Gibiru, I would very much enjoy reading your comments.
That's interesting, monkeylove. I'm surprised that Bing done so well in the tests. Beware of Monkeypox.
Hi, Just something to lookover below: https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_password_managers thoughts and opinions/responses.
Hi @bellgamin Have you had a chance to explore https://mojeek.com any further. I like it a lot but I'm biased as I'm in the UK! JPC
I checked this search engine out a few years ago and walked away. Ho-hum. Just spent a whopping 10 minutes or so throwing some medical, literary, movie, current political scenarios, yada, yada at it and color me impressed. Give it a shot for yourself compared to the almighty Google. IMO, a respectable search engine that's made a heck of a lot of progress.
I use Gibiru for now, but I use DuckDuckGo as 2nd opinion. Gibiru keeps getting better & better. So does the Duck. Haven't tried Mojeek in a while so I shall have another go with it. Aloha to all from Hawaii.
I did some tests with Gibiru.com with both Firefox and Edge the results are the same. If the Gibiru.com home page has no trackers, just run a simple search to highlight 2 blocked Google trackers in Edge: With Firefox you can also view (if the sequence is not too fast) the data transfer from Google.com: With DDG none of this.
A hand pointer, not an arrow, is displayed in the DuckDuckGo search. Anywhere on the page you click, a link opens. How can I prevent any click on the page from opening a link?
Um, remove the malware from your PC? I can't duplicate this. You will probably need to post more details about how this is happening.
When you hover the mouse over a link, Google Search displays a hand pointer; otherwise, it displays an arrow. DuckDuckGo Search displays only a hand pointer; it opens the link even if you click the description of a website.
Ok, I see what you mean. The entire text block for a result it a hyperlink. I doubt there is much you can do about that. Use Bing? Same results. That's where they get their data. Sign up for Microsoft rewards and get paid to search. They're probably tracking you either way.
You can probably follow the process given in the link provided earlier, i.e., open several tabs, one for each search engine, enter key phrases, especially for very controversial topics, and then note the top results, etc.
I have recently switched to Neeva (without an account) and it is surprisingly accurate, not just English results, but local ones as well. I used Brave now since DDG has deep down gone.
