Microsoft SwiftKey for Android and iOS gets a couple of new features in latest update

Microsoft SwiftKey has received an update on both Android and iOS, adding a couple of exciting new features.

Android users will now be able to search emoji using as many as 139 languages in the SwiftKey keyboard app, including Persian, Romanian, Thai, and Turkish. With the latest update installed, SwiftKey users on Android can now type in Awadhi, East Frisian, Garhwali, Hmar, and Saraiki. Another useful new feature is what the company called "Intelligent Nudge", which automatically detects a task and asks users whether they want to add it to Microsoft To Do.
The latest SwiftKey update on Android carries version number 7.9.6.8.

The latest update to the Microsoft SwiftKey iOS client takes the version of the app to 2.9.2 and includes no other new features except for the ability to search emoji in many new languages.

Microsoft’s discontinuing SwiftKey on iOS next week

Microsoft confirmed that it’s removing SwiftKey from the Apple App Store and ending support for the iOS version of the keyboard app on October 5th. It will still be available if you’ve already downloaded SwiftKey on your iPhone, so long as you don’t uninstall it yourself.

“Microsoft will continue support for SwiftKey Android as well as the underlying technology that powers the Windows touch keyboard,” Chris Wolfe, the director of product management at SwiftKey, said in a statement to The Verge. “For those customers who have SwiftKey installed on iOS, it will continue to work until it is manually uninstalled or a user gets a new device.”

Microsoft's SwiftKey for iOS is back from the grave

About two months ago, Microsoft revealed its plans to kill SwiftKey for iOS in early October 2022. The company never explained why it had decided to pull the plug on the project, leaving fans scratching their heads in frustration. However, SwiftKey for iOS has not spent much time in the grave—after a little more than one month, Microsoft is making a sudden U-turn to bring SwiftKey back to life.

Pedram Rezaei (@pedram_re), Microsoft Maps & Local Services Division CTO, revealed on their Twitter account that the company decided to restore SwiftKey for iOS "with popular demand." Moreover, the company is now "investing heavily in the keyboard," and users can stay tuned for exciting future changes.

There are no further details on what that "heavy investing" means, so we can only guess what Microsoft plans to do with its resurrected AI keyboard for iOS and Android. Microsoft's representatives promise some "very exciting" changes.

I honestly do not understand the logic behind this move by Microsoft. They could have easily determined whether SwiftKey has or hasn't got popular support on iOS, without such theatrics.

As the best keyboard app out there, iPhone users, myself included, felt lost, especially as the Apple keyboard, well, is a big mess.

Fortunately, it didn’t take long for Microsoft to revert the decision. SwiftKey for iOS is back on the App Store, and what’s more, the software giant is once again committed to improving the app in the long term. The plans to discontinue the app have been dropped, so SwiftKey will continue to be the only way to type properly on an iPhone.

In the meantime, the Android version is getting more love as well. The most recent update of SwiftKey, for example, makes the keyboard app feel at home on Android 13, as it introduces not only bug fixes but also further polishing for the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system.

As spotted by Neowin, Microsoft has updated SwiftKey to allow changing the app language right from the settings app available on your Android device.
