My two favorite programs are Macrium and Image For Windows, BUT, the average Joe who doesn't know diddly squat about this stuff also has the right to be able to protect themselves; they need and deserve to have the easy-to-use, one-click programs.

After wrapping up from weeks of imaging/restores testing the backups on real discs etc. My favorites are 3 which are Aomei Backupper-Macrium-Drive Snapshot, latter of the two not necessarily in that order but that doesn't really matter. What DOES matter is that for me anyway AOMEI in my opinion really stepped up their research and this particular backup product.

Even with dissimilar hardware platforms and arrangements it was simply effortless and reliable without even a hint of a hiccup.

I absolutely agree but with most software now, the pendulum has totally swung the other way, where the dumbing down of software "one click" over the years has become crazy (especially with pretty, flashy, big buttoned GUIs) with no features / options for power users or such features / options removed in later versions.

Sure it's all about making money but I wouldn't spend £50 buying Macrium Reflect when I can't even do the most basic task of automating with it.

I guess I'm missing something here with your Macrium REFLECT comment. With REFLECT, all my imaging backups are fully automated as far as scheduling is concerned, image consolidation is managed automatically based on my System requirements, restores are fully automated once the time point selection is made, and due to its RAPID DELTA RESTORE (RDR) feature, it is an excellent System SnapShot tool for returning quickly to previous System states.

As a "typical" user, what type of "automation" are you referring to that I may or may not need?

It makes sense to me that since the vast majority of users are not "geeks" then the vast majority of programs should be simple. As long as there are always a few of the complicated, "geeker" programs for those who want them, what's the problem?

As an everyday user just imaging your computer then I doubt you'd need or bother with complete automation.

However since the early 2000s I have preferred automation as in. I can walk over to a computer (and even ones that I've never used before) and just run a simple batch file from a floppy disk (at the time) and have the software create an image of the Windows partition (or full disk) onto a second hard drive, external drive without having to manually run the disk imaging software, install the disk imaging software or tailor the disk imaging software to the individual computer.

The same goes for restoring images. I just pop in an usb stick, external hard drive and away it goes. Nothing whatsoever to press, click, setup etc. Complete automation. (however on one family members computer, it does automatically create an image of their current Windows partition with the date in the file name before restoring their image as a fail safe).

Symantec Ghost (in its heyday), Drive Snapshot and Image for Windows are amazing pieces of software for this and all three of them run portable as default, so no messing with boot media, registering, activating etc when creating images.

With Macrium Reflect, you'd need their "Macrium Reflect Deployment Kit" at £2372 to do what Drive snapshot can do at £33 / Image for Windows can do at £47.

Hey, Easter, I've got a question for you. When you are doing a fresh, brand new backup on Aomei, do you use the "System Backup" option or the "Disk Backup" option?

    Thanks, Acadia

Hi @Acadia - Easy reply. I only ever do FULL DISK ONLY backups-(incremental too now) Many others benefit from System Backups but i'm not one of them. Chalk it up to personal preferences i suppose. Old habit as well.

Makes sense, plus I just found this at their website: "There is no need to run system backup if you have created a disk backup."
Found it on this link: https://www.ubackup.com/help/disk-backup.html

    Thanks, Easter.

I have Aomei Backupper Pro on Windows 10 and 11 systems. Can I use the Aomei Bootable USB (created on Windows 10) on Windows 11?

For those who use Aomei Backupper i renamed the first full image on an external drive. I subsequently renamed that folder as so to assign Unit 1,2, or 3 but when using it Aomei couldn't find the image it initially created due to my manually renaming the folder. Once i returned the same name again it found it and proceeded to complete an incremental.

I won't do it again but it's one thing that will throw off the program if you do.

Thanks for the information. That's good to know. I assume that the same would apply to other image programs too.

I think that may be right. Although not a deal breaker by any stretch it obviously operated on your initial naming convention for the folder selected to let Aomei Image and settle under that folder name. Any simple change to the folder name and it will alert to cannot be found. Renamed it right back again and it returned to normal.

Don't you have to rename the image and folder in the backup task too? Does Aomei allow you to edit the backup task?
