Thanks for keeping us informed on this, @imdb. I just discovered that McAfee Stinger isn't simply an on-demand scanner, but that it comes with an interesting additional feature, McAfee Real Protect: "Stinger now also includes Real Protect, which is a real-time behavior detection program that monitors for suspicious activity on the computer. Real Protect uses machine learnings and automated behavioral based classifications in the cloud to detect zero-day infections."
As with any AV/AM app with real time protection, my guess is that it would be a really bad idea to run this app alongside the likes of freebies Bitdefender and Kaspersky. Stinger appears to be diligently kept up-to-date with solid ratings via Major Geeks and Softpedia users. The acutely few current tests putting this app through the ringer that can be gleaned from the web is that this app is not a nagging gig begging to be upgraded to a paid for product as the aforementioned freebie apps unfortunately are. With what few current testing results are accessible to prove the efficacy of this app (minus the obvious AV-Comparatives, etc.), it may be more of a choice of branding decisions as opposed to reliable empirical data.
Stinger leave a running service behind (Real Protect), I remember I had this and uninstalled as it was not working properly , maybe its fixed now but I consider it non-reliable bloatware personally
