I'm seriously starting to fear for Zuckerberg's mental health. I've read that Meta as already spend nearly $10 billion on this virtual universe crap. I don't see how this will become a success, I think most people won't enjoy this stuff. Most people like to live and work in the real world.

Facebook went all-in on its plans for the metaverse, changing its corporate name to Meta last October. But it seems Mark Zuckerberg either didn't know or didn't care that the trademark was already in use.

MetaX says it has spent about eight months trying to negotiate with Facebook but to no avail, leaving it with no other option than to take legal action. The lawsuit alleges that Facebook infringed META's federally registered trademarks and common law trademark rights and engaged in egregious acts of unfair competition. As the race to realize the metaverse kicks off, Mark Zuckerberg told employees that Meta would be competing directly with Apple when it comes to creating AR and VR platforms.

In June, a Meta employee asked how Apple's absence from the Metaverse Standards Forum would influence Meta's ecosystem.
Zuckerberg told employees that Meta would be competing against Apple to determine "what direction the internet should go in," according to a recording of an internal meeting obtained by The Verge.

Zuckerberg also believes that Apple will likely want to tightly control the experience because "they believe that by doing everything themselves and tightly integrating that they build a better consumer experience"

The position puts Apple diametrically opposed to Meta, which already allows side loading on its Quest headset. Zuckerberg calls this a "deep, philosophical competition about what direction the internet should go in."

When it was first introduced by Meta's Mark Zuckerberg last fall, there was skepticism in some corners about the metaverse, the systems of avatars and virtual worlds that Zuckerberg is building and which he says will be the next version of the internet.

Richard Kerris, who runs a team of a hundred people at chip giant Nvidia who work on building technology for the metaverse, known as Omniverse (more here), is not at all skeptical about that future world.

"The only thing I'm skeptical about is how people tend to talk about it," Kerris told ZDNet, on a recent trip through New York City to meet with developers.

Tinder CEO Renate Nyborg, who became the dating app’s first female CEO just last September, is also leaving the position, parent company Match Group’s CEO Bernard Kim announced. Kim himself was named as CEO just two months ago.

Nyborg previously set out ambitious plans for Tinder’s take on the metaverse (or “Tinderverse” as she called it). Tinder acquired a company called Hyperconnect last year, which focuses on video, AI, and augmented reality technology, and Nyborg later cited its avatar-based “Single Town” experience as a way Tinder’s users might one day be able to meet and interact with one another in virtual spaces, TechCrunch reported at the time.

Now, however, Kim says he’s instructed Hyperconnect to scale back.

“Given uncertainty about the ultimate contours of the metaverse and what will or won’t work, as well as the more challenging operating environment, I’ve instructed the Hyperconnect team to iterate but not invest heavily in metaverse at this time,” Kim said.
“We’ll continue to evaluate this space carefully, and we will consider moving forward at the appropriate time when we have more clarity on the overall opportunity and feel we have a service that is well-positioned to succeed.”

The main technologies of the metaverse – augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR), extended reality (XR) for both – are nothing new. In 1990, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) showcased the Virtual Interface Environment Workstation (VIEW). The agency created VIEW in partnership with VPL Research, the 1980s VR company founded by Jaron Lanier.

So, the idea of leveraging virtual elements and environments for productive and entertainment applications is not new. What is new, though, is that required technologies have become substantially more powerful, drastically smaller, and much less expensive over past decades. Gone are the days of backpacks with equipment; welcome sensor-equipped lightweight smart glasses with advanced display technologies.

Earlier this week, Mark Zuckerberg posted a screenshot of his digital avatar standing in front of the Eiffel Tower and what I think is supposed to be la Sagrada Família as a way of announcing that Horizon Worlds was launching in France and Spain. Unfortunately for him, the internet more or less immediately started dragging and meme-ifying the screenshot of the virtual reality platform — likely because the graphics were, as one Twitter user described it, about on par with the Teletubbies game for the PlayStation One.

Zuckerberg’s apparently seen the memes and wants to let you know that Meta is working on the graphics. On Friday, he posted some new screenshots to Facebook and Instagram, showing off a significantly more life-like version of himself and an ancient-looking plaza. “Major updates to Horizon and avatar graphics coming soon,” he said, promising to share more details at the upcoming Connect conference. Meta spokesperson Peter Gray told The Verge that the company didn’t have any news to share on when that would be, but last year’s event was held in October.

Meta, formerly Facebook, has officially rolled out what it’s calling Meta accounts and Meta Horizon Profiles. The global launch will be gradual, but both “accounts” are to be used in place of the personal social media account logins — Facebook and Instagram — once used to log in to the company’s virtual reality (VR) system.

Users, new and old, of Metas VR devices, will be required to signup for a Meta account to log in and access the metaverse. The company is ditching the old way of logging on after complaints around privacy concerns arose regarding using personal social media accounts.

Though there is no need to connect Meta-run social media accounts, the company is still presenting it as an option. The company claims the connection will allow for greater experiences in the metaverse such as live stream sharing, messaging and finding followers faster.

In addition to the Meta account, a “Meta Horizon Profile” will replace the once-used Oculus account. The profile will be the home for all things avatar-based and be considered the social media for the metaverse. The company once used the term “Friends” in the Metaverse but will now consider them “Followers” — giving the Horizon World platform an Instagram feel.

Maybe someone should tell them that Second Life already had its time and most people got bored of it.

If you wanted a fun metaverse, then you'd do better playing GTA V online in VR.
Highly detailed rendered player models with plenty of clothing and customisation.
Houses and vehicles you can own, and many servers have an economy to go with the many jobs on offer.

Unless you get to challenge Zuck to a deathmatch, I can't see what they could possibly add to interest people.

Info-Tech Research Group (ITRG) has said that the metaverse is going to shake up the retail world. The company said that avatar-driven customer services, augmented reality, and 3D interaction will disrupt the sector, but suggested progress could be a bit sluggish at first because retailers are unsure where to start.

The researchers found that if metaverses use blockchain technologies too, then there will be other benefits for retail. With blockchain smart contracts, for example, parties to a transaction will be made to fulfil their obligations without the need of a middleman.

The biggest player in the metaverse right now is probably Meta, it has its popular Oculus headsets, has renamed itself, and has been spending a lot of money to try to build the technology required for a comprehensive metaverse. Last month, however, shareholder Brad Gerstner called on Meta to limit spending on the metaverse and become more focused. All of this is a long way of saying that the idea of the metaverse has been around for a long time, and that we have not gotten there yet can be laid down to two chief reasons.

A second problem is that the technology is just not there yet. We wrote about this years ago in 2016 (and later in 2019). And while the industry has made some advancements since then, they still have a ways to go.
We still think all these things will come some day, but the metaverse is many years away.
