intel only had a single i3 being the i3-12100 the last gen, so it seems like i3 is also going out the window soon

that said, i couldn't care any less how the cpus are called as long as they work

I honestly didn't know that these brand names still existed? And how about stop producing entry level CPU's for laptops and desktops, let's face it, they are simply not powerful enough.

In the late 90s Pentium used to be Intel's top of the line processors. When I bought my first PC, it had a Pentium 166 processor in it. I remember boasting to my school friends and everyone was like WOW!... When Intel changed to Core Duos and other Core branding, they should have just retired the Pentium line right then, instead of dragging it on in an extreme entry level processor category.

I remember an incident 4-5 years ago, when I worked for a bit in retail. This middle aged lady came to buy an entry level laptop, so I showed her some samples on display. She asked about the processors, I started explaining the differences, even though I knew she knew nothing about them. I was recommending the Core i3 entry level laptop, but when she heard me say the name Pentium on the adjacent laptop, she immediately said that she had heard Pentium was a very good processor, so she ended up buying the laptop with the Pentium processor. Now, the Pentium laptop was cheaper then the Core i3, but for few dollars more she could have gotten a much superior processor. But she didn't choose it for the price! She chose it because she thought that the Pentium processor was superior and I was just trying to up sell her an inferior processor. She must have heard about Pentium when she was in college 20 years ago or something.

When she was gone I stood there holding my head, and I thought to myself that Intel should have just retired their Pentium line, instead of creating this confusion.

Well never too late I guess........

You win. I had a Pentium 133. With 24 MB of RAM. And a 1.2 GB hard drive. What it beast it was in those days. Too bad people still think that they are good based on the name. I wouldn't buy anything Pentium after the Pentium III. The Pentium 4 sucked and it didn't get better from there.

Yup, Pentium 166, 32 MB RAM, 2.1 GB HDD, 33.6 kbps Fax Modem... cutting edge specs. Those who weren't wowed criticized me for needlessly spending money on such specs which they told me could never possibly be utilized during the life of the PC. If they only knew then.....

That won't happen, because PC manufacturers like to cater to the bottom end of the market.

This, plus it makes for a shorter lifespan before you need to upgrade to another low end machine. They're hoping you'll run the entry level PC for 2 years instead of maybe running a high end one for 5.

I just think it's ridiculous that such machines are still being sold. About a year ago my niece bought a low budget laptop with some crappy Intel Core i3 CPU, because she thought it would be good enough for stuff like web browsing, but it was slow as hell, also because it had an HDD. I couldn't stand it, so I bought a new laptop for her with a Core i5 and 512GB SSD.
