I wasn't aware of this big data stealing scandal. I use Avast Premium Security and as far as I can tell the software works fine. Note that there is a "Personal Privacy" section in settings where data sharing (for marketing purposes) can be turned off. It's also not necessary to use their browser plugins or their branded browser.

Some posts say it doesn't matter if you change personal privacy settings. The just closed the subsidiary that was doing it and said sorry. They should be sued but there is no law for any of these companies.they can do what they like..

They can make products out of people and there is no sanctions.

Using people as unpaid researchers to 'improve the product' there should be legislation against anything except doing the job they are bought for, laws against telemetry etc, i will be getting rid of avast.

I agree that there should be better accountability for these kinds of infractions; hopefully there will be eventually. As for ignoring the settings can you link to posts making that claim? It's common for software to require users to opt-out of data collection instead of asking them to opt-in, but actually ignoring the user's choice to opt-out is unacceptable.

When you look at the length of time companies keep your info for and what they use it for it makes you wonder about how free some softwares really are.
Scroll down to 'Personal Data We Process'

Is there a legitimate reason for keeping the data? Is it necessary for threat protection or is it only for marketing purposes? I don't know how to parse that. By the way it's common for "free" products to collect data, but I thought we were talking about paid subscriptions to Avast.

avast was known to collect data and pass it to a 3rd-party business. but they canceled relationship. but i have doubt they dont collect any more. any vendor collects user data, either anonymous or with id to improve the product.

They shouldn't be allowed to collect user data to improve the product. That makes the user an unpaid researcher

I will be getting rid of avast.

All of them are the same with their laughable privacy policies

Is it possible to be safe without av?

will a hardware firewall protect against viruses?

Well, they shouldn't be allowed to collect user data without the user's permission, and that should be "opt-in" instead of "opt-out". When it comes to data collection it's common for programs to be "opt-out" and people just click past the choice when they install, but that can be avoided by paying attention. I don't know if people can be safe without AV. It requires technical skill to perceive and avoid online threats and most people don't have that in my experience.

All these companies with so called freeware are businesses There is no free in business.if the product is free you are the product in
The first thing i do when installing or just installed is go through all the options and turn off help us improve/special offers etc Avast free has one part of the.GUI which is all ads upgrades. I understood avast spied even on people who dod this.

Norton spams ads even when turned off
Nortom call their ads service notifications

Agreed, if the software is "free" then you personal information is what you're paying with. Paid subscription products are a different matter. If you turn off options in the Avast Personal Privacy settings when you have a paid subscription then that should be honored - are they? As for Norton I don't use it and can't comment.

Get it on Google play and privacy on the same page lol.
I don't have a Google account to sign in to. All those apps should be on the vendor site
    Don't Norton own avira?
It has in app purchase s so probably pushing ads
They should give up this free. There is no free in software no more than when you get a free sample in the supermarket

I always had norton until it started popups even when you opted out and called them service notifications. How is an ad for phone security a service notification when it pops on a pc?

    a) "Get it on Google play" : That's how android works.
    b) You want an AV for PC or smartphone?
    c) The complaining is not a solution, imo. If you don't like the x AV, move on to the next preferred one.

Avast harvested and sold user data from their browser add on for seven years and only stopped because they got caught.

There is no such thing as free when it comes to AV software, you will pay somehow either with ads of your data being sold.

The big and doubtful question is do they still harvest your data if you pay a subscription, you would hope not but its not really clear in their T&C's.

Free AV is a bit of a minefield at the moment, lots of different names but a lot of them operating under one umbrella, as someone who still runs 8.1 I use free AV as built in isn't good enough and I don't spend a lot of time online anymore so won't get value for money buying one, I'm trialling Avast One too but since you can't remove the modules you don't want and it all comes bundled I see a lot of redundant crud running in Task Manager, I may try BD free next but I'm running out of options now.
