Instagram is expanding NFT features to more than 100 countries
The app started a public test of NFTs in feed posts, messages and Stories in May.

The non-fungible token (NFT) market has fallen off a cliff, but that's not stopping Instagram from doubling down on digital collectibles. After a test launch in May, the app is expanding its NFT features to more than 100 countries across Africa, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and the Americas.

Instagram users can include NFTs in their feed and messages, as well as in augmented reality stickers in Stories. NFT creators and collectors are automatically tagged for attribution. You can't buy or sell NFTs on Instagram just yet, but Meta has strongly hinted it's working on a marketplace.

As of today, Instagram now supports third-party wallets from Coinbase and Dapper, in addition to Rainbow, MetaMask and Trust Wallet. On top of the Ethereum and Polygon blockchains, it will also support Flow.

Meta Begins Testing NFT Integration on Facebook
The testing of NFTs on Facebook follows a series of pilot integrations on Instagram in May.

Social media giant Meta (FB) has started to test Polygon and Ethereum-based non-fungible tokens (NFTs) among a selected group of creators on Facebook, according to Meta's Product Manager Navdeep Singh.

Singh posted a series of screenshots of the update, which includes a "digital collectibles" tab that will allow Facebook users to showcase NFTs on their profile page.

In May, Meta made its first foray into NFTs by testing NFT integrations on Instagram.

"We're expanding our test so more creators around the world can display their NFTs on Instagram," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on June 21. "We'll bring this feature to Facebook soon too – starting with a small group of U.S. creators – so people can cross-post on Instagram and Facebook."

The NFT market is experiencing a downturn alongside a lull in the wider crypto market. NFT trading volume on OpenSea during June was its lowest in 11 months, according to Dune Analytics.

Facebook now supports NFTs
Users can post digital collectibles they own on Instagram as well.

Meta has followed through on its threat promise to bring NFT (non-fungible token) support to Facebook. Users can now post digital collectibles that they have in their digital wallets across Facebook and Instagram. After they connect digital wallets to one app, they'll be able to access NFTs from both of them.

The company is making the move a few weeks after it expanded access to Instagram's NFT functions in dozens more countries. It started testing NFTs on Facebook earlier this summer. Meta is moving deeper into NFT territory even though the market for the digital tokens has nosedived in recent months. There are indications that Meta is working on a marketplace where people can buy and sell NFTs, but whether people will actually use it remains to be seen.
