Yes and their 65% market share is a testimony to that hard work.

 

Is the 65% due to a conscious choice re quality of the browser, or more due to the fact that it is the default on Android phones?

Somewhat the Android thing, also somewhat in the early days them slipping it into other software installers as a hidden "optional" item.

The Chrome team is delighted to announce the promotion of Chrome 104 to the stable channel for Windows, Mac and Linux.Chrome 104 is also promoted to our new extended stable channel for Windows and Mac. This will roll out over the coming days/weeks.

Chrome 104.0.5112.79 ( Mac/linux) and 104.0.5112.79/80/81 ( Windows) contains a number of fixes and improvements -- a list of changes is available in the log. Watch out for upcoming Chrome and Chromium blog posts about new features and big efforts delivered in 104.

This update includes 27 security fixes.

 

Due to both factors, certainly. Being default Android browser surely has a big impact on the 65% share, but no way of knowing to what extent.
