Debian's last update broke my VM's. Been watching for a Virtualbox or Deb bullseye update but nothing so far.

    5.10.0-15-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.120-1 (2022-06-09)

I made the mistake of setting up a Debian Cinnamon host. I next installed Mate alongside and can mount my host using Mate but the VMs are still in fallback. Host is perfect using either Mate or Cinnamon.

Is FALLBACK caused by the host or partially caused by the VM's DE? That question isn't really clear. I ask because I wonder if it would make any difference installing mate on the cinnamon VMs as well?

I might simply create a new virtual machine using a non-Cinnamon DE and see how it runs. From casual reading though it sounds like the Cinnamon host is mainly the cause.

I have a crap load of edits and tweaks on the host so I am trying to avoid starting over from scratch. Its a custom partition based install. Been running slick for a long time. Simply broke almost immediately after the last update.

VirtualBox issued new updates a few days ago and everything is working again now. Just an FYI!
