You can use WLC without Microsoft Firewall, but obviously you can't use it to create block rules.

I don't have an answer to your question but I do know that BitDefender's firewall is very competent in default mode, and is also quite granular for users to create own rules, if desired.

Thanks @Krusty and @bellgamin for the answers.

I have an update. WLC produced a new icon in the Notification Area, reporting "Not Safe items detected!" So I opened the VS GUI and went to the Whitelist Cloud section. In the upper right, it said, "Threats Blocked: 1". So I tried to scroll through the list below that to learn what it had found, but I couldn't drag the scrollbar down to the end of the list: almost at once, the scrollbar jumps back to the top of the list. Nor did clicking on the down arrow to the right of the list do anything.

Then I noticed that VS said, "Unresolved Not Safe Items: Scanning." All right, so I figured it was busy and I'd have to wait until it was done scanning, to be able to see the rest of the list.

Except that it's now like six hours later, it still claims to be scanning, and I still can't scroll around the list.

Is there a way to pause/suspend this WLC scan, so that one can see what it's found so far? I see a button to disable the scan, but that makes the list disappear.

There is a minor UI issue where WLC won't populate properly until you close the UI. If you close the UI, then re-open it, does it still show as scanning?

If Krusty's suggestion doesn't work, & you decide to disable the scan, you can easily upload it to VirusTotal. Scan by LOTS of top-tier Antivirus apps takes a matter of only seconds. If you don't already have a uploader to send stuff to VirusTotal, you can get a good, free one HERE.

I tried that as you suggested, and unfortunately it still claimed to be scanning.

Rebooted the machine and this time the tray icon said all was OK, yet the UI still said there was one threat.

In addition, I noticed that VoodooShieldService.exe was taking upwards of 10 percent of CPU cycles before the reboot. After the reboot, this didn't go above 4 percent. Disabling WLC brought it down to 0 (of course).

Thanks, I knew about VirusTotal but not about this uploader. :thumb:

Now WLC is saying again that it detected "Not Safe" items, and yet I can't open the GUI. Clicking on the tray icons isn't doing anything, and clicking on the VS item in the Start menu gives me an error-type tone.

I bought the paid version of VS a few days ago and the free version was working much more smoothly for me.

Perhaps it's best you email Dan and get this sorted.

WLC always had every now and then files where it stuck in "analyzing" forever (at least for me). The only option was to mail Dan about it so he could fix it. Since there is still no report button for it.
Have you checked that bitdefender is not blocking some internet access for VS? Last time I use VS I had problems with Tinywall because VS wanted a VS.exe and a VSservice and someotherstuff to connect (Names from memory). I think the missing VSservice internet access gave me problems.

    Sorry for your problem.

When I use VS, I always disable WLC. WLC is primarily a reputation checker. The AV I use employs a combination of signature-based checks plus behavior-based checks plus reputation checks. Thus, the AV I use is a more thorough checker than WLC so I see no need to enable WLC. Among the top-tier AVs that employ multifaceted checks (including reputation checks) are Norton, MS Defender, & Kaspersky.

Does Voodooshield have a users forum, other than this one? I tried to find one on the Internet, but with no success.

Thank you, now I understand it better.

I let WLC run overnight. It seems to have finally settled down and I could scroll up and down the list. CPU usage is at 0% now. I also made sure to set it to run the Snapshot Scan only once every 24 hours instead of the "every 5 minutes" default.

Nope, there used to be one but Dan shut it down, I think too much work for him to maintain.

Whenever I decide to play with bitdefender total I have voodoo with WLC running along side it with WFW, no issues. A lot of third party firewalls don't even disable WFW.

Kinda interesting, when using VD with GData, and trying to run a malware exe, why VoodooShield reacts faster than GData Av. I dont like that if VD can check any exes before Gdata?
