I guess it's not a general fix all. I am still getting freezing on a Bing search. Why was I using Firefox or Bing? I guess to see if it worked. So apparently not. Back to Edge I go...

For me the new option concerning the download behaviour does not work completely as it should.

    Here my configuration:

    AW.jpg

--> I have chosen for files in general the option "Ask whether to open or save files" and specifically for pdf-files the action "Open with PDF-XChange Editor".

Nevertheless pdf-files continue to be handled in two ways simultaneously: they open with the PDF-XChange Editor (desired behaviour) and they are (automatically) downloaded (undesired behaviour).

I can change this in two ways:
    - Chosing as action for pdf-files "Always ask" ("Jedes Mal nachfragen") instead of opening with my PDF-viewer
    or
    - Switching in "about:config" the value for "browser.download.improvements_to_download_panel" from "true" to "false".

Both are workarounds but of course no ideal solutions.

    Can anyone confirm the issue?

    first
is going to be deprecated, please dont use it and appreceate the new option(s)

and no, i cannot confirm your issue.
PDF-X is selected here, pdf from here opens directly in that viewer
    https://www.lancsngfl.ac.uk/cmsmanual/index.php?category_id=14

what you probably missed is that opening behavior can be controlled from server. if it is announced as octed because not configured (octed means any file), and thus firefox is asking. so firefox is doing right and you need to submit an example link where it happens.

btw strange that you dont ask at camp-firefox as the biggest german speaking support community

I know. And my intention was to reset it (to "True") now as the new option exists.

I tried it with your link. It did not work for me. :( As soon as I revert the "browser.download.improvements...." to "True" I have the described "double action". (Maybe I have changed something else concerning the downloads in about:config. I will have to check it.)

Thanks for all your information. :thumb:

I was indeed a member there some time ago. But the people who have the command there are simply unbearable for me (speaking about 3-4 persons). I don't like their attitude and I don't like their behaviour. I do not even remember if they fired me or if I left the community by myself. :D But I continue to read sometimes postings. It can surely be a useful source for getting information about Firefox.

camp - depends of the viewpoint...

the "problem" behind your issue that you need to provide the about:support and maybe used antivirus which exceed this thread (start a new one, here or there)
your problem is part of your settings, either official settings or about:config.
you need to try a new profile or "Fehlerbehebungsmodus", then to recreate a new profile bit by bit.

You're not alone, @Peter 123. Same thing happens here. Really annoying. I'm also trying to find a solution to this odd download behaviour.

EDIT: Changing browser.download.improvements_to_download_panel from True to False seems to work here. FF asks me what to do with a pdf file: Open in FF, Open with PDF XChange Editor, Save file. PDF files are no longer downloaded to my Downloads folder. Maybe it's some sort of a temporary solution, but it seems to work for the time being.

Yes, I think I will have to try something like that.

Bad for you, but good for me to hear that I am not alone. :D Thanks for your feedback.

same help for you, try the given methods otherwise you wont have luck.
    a "metoo" posting wont help.

for the location for the give link
you only have to look into the process list, ofc windows task manager is PITA, use Process Explorer or ProcessHacker. it starts here without any question, used with the settings peter showed me.

    btw
you can examine your handlers.json, open it with NPP and the json plugin (to "format" the json), and post the result for
    Code:
            "application/pdf": {

            },
i left that section blank to see what you have found.

I won't help, I agree, but at least it is a clear indicator that it is not just one user who has encountered this annoying problem.

I could narrow the source for the issue (but not fix it):
    - I tested with "Fehlerbehebungsmodus": The issue continued (--> undesired "double action").

    - I created a new profile: No issue - but only as long as I did not change the default action for pdf-files (which is "Open in Firefox" [= with Firefox' own pdf-viewer]).
As soon as I changed vom "Open in Firefox" to "PDF-XChange Editor" the issue was here again: Pdf-file opened in this viewer but simultaneously it was downloaded.

So normally I would say this is a bug by Mozilla caused by their senseless change to automatic download respectively the following elimination of this nonsense with version 101.0.

But I am worried by Brummelchen's statement:
Just to be sure: When writing "in that viewer", you refer to the "PDF-XChange Editor" (or the old "PDF-XChange Viewer" which also leads to the issue on my computer)?

was earlier. thats why you should read the camp-firefox, for rational informations, not guessing or assumptions.
you still miss informations behind the current development and thus your judging is wrong.
i only can tell you that is something wrong in your setup. based on the given link to test files.
for testing purpose i always use a fresh profile.
i cannot select PDF-X to use but the windows default program "Windows-Standardanwendung".
a pdf from given link will run PDF-X without user interaction. (same as chosen PDF-X in my working profile).

so at least the must be a problem on your site and/or settings. thats why i recommended that you start another thread for your issue and fulfill the demand informations: about:config and content of manifest.json.

i would consider me as firefox experienced. the problem is, i only can hep out for users, but i am no developper. if you want to submit a bug (i curently dont see a bug), you should submit it here
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

there exits no other way round for you.
