Microsoft keeps pushing these stupid update previews and it's getting old. Usually I just uninstall them but the one that installed this morning (March 3, 2022) I can't find any way to uninstall it.

It's not listed in the Uninstall Updates window.

I attempted to uninstall it via the Command Prompt and it appeared to uninstall but when I rebooted it still appears to be there. The first image below shows it still in the Update History.

    Clipboard01.jpg

This image shows it still on my system when I did a search.

Anyone know how to get rid of this thing? Better yet, does anyone know how to stop for good these update previews from even being installed?

I sometimes also can't uninstall certain updates, I guess this is normal in Windows? I personally use Win Update Stop to block Windows from auto updating. But you can also use InControl, see link.

You can uninstall only these updates or what ever, what have been installed. This is only one file what is till now only downloaded, but not installed. So, you can any time it simply delete, wipe etc.
If You want some of so called prereleases install, simply go to updates and click on install button or link, if don't want them, simply disable recommended and prerelease updates.
But most of all I wonder, why You have ordered such a updates at all if You even don't know what they are. They don't come itself, they must be ordered.
And one more thing. Have you really never cleaned the following folders so far?
    Code:
    %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download
    %windir%\servicing\LCU
    and
    %windir%\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local

Preview updates do not get offered, unless you have enabled Insider and even if you did, they do not install by themselves on the RC/Stable channel, only on Beta/Devs. The simplest way to force unsubscribe is to disable Optional Data.
    Code:
    reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\DataCollection" /v "AllowTelemetry" /t REG_DWORD /d "0" /f

Yes, I have Windows 10 Home, sorry for not mentioning that. InControl looks pretty good. Does it have to run at startup? It looks like it just adds some registry keys so it shouldn't have to always be running, is that correct?

you should not use InControl because it has other features as you need and its usage can cause epic fail. stick with the registry.

As far as I know, if the update is not listed in the "Uninstall Updates window", it is because you did indeed uninstalled it.
That is expected even when you uninstall an update.
What the search shows (in the picture you posted) is that the update is in the Software Distribution folder. That folder is for back ups.

I don't think the update is installed in your computer right this moment. You ll probably get it offered again soon.

chris titus tech has a powershell app that pops up where you can set your updates to security updates only. And it has a few other cool features.

Just paste this link into powershell.

    Code:
    iex ((New-Object System.Net.WebClient).DownloadString('https://git.io/JJ8R4'))

i speak in special for lack different view for windows updates. windows gpo is much more powerfull because it is more granular, either as gpedit or registry tweaks.

    "security updates only" means
    https://www.tenforums.com/windows-1...ity-quality-updates-overview.html#post1531065
so user miss the half year cumulative updates - until the used build is EOL.
each half year release gets updates for round about 2 years, for example 20H2
    https://docs.microsoft.com/de-de/lifecycle/announcements/windows-10-20h2-end-of-servicing
which is getting EOL this march (5/2022), which is only 1.5 years like 1903 and 1909
if you disable those cumulative updates user may run into worst case - means a high vulnerable windows.

i know that kind of discussion about forced updates. and my thoughts are same as MS - a lot/the majority of users dont care about updates - "updates are waste of time, dont matter, i am secured by xy-antivirus blah" and thats why MS decided to force - in special "home" users - to update. "pro" users have the choice because "pro" in common includes a more experienced user.

i have read the grc page - holy ****
    https://www.grc.com/incontrol.htm
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thr...updating-and-upgrading-with-incontrol.444115/
"OS upgrades are not under your control"
thats not true. user decided to install home, pro or other. in case of "home" it was more than once declared from MS that user has not much settings for updates. i wrote above that there exist a reg-tweak to offer a choice. thats kinda nice from ms that such tweaks do work in windows home.

grc is dealing with big red letters and the fear of users. decent authors do not need such click baiting.

from my experience - a lot of users use such tools - and forgot they used it. and got stuck on a vulnerable windows. thats why i recommend the reg-tweak and nothing else.

Sorry, I don't actually use it. I'm not a big fan of installing updates for Windows. I use it only if there are severe security holes that need to be patched or if Windows is somehow corrupted. But the thing is, it's often updates that corrupt Windows LOL.

Thank you all for your replies. Today I got another Update Preview, InControl didn't stop it.

I don't have the time or patients for this. It's gonna do what it's gonna do anyway so I guess I'll just let it.
