looking for firewall to use with windows defender to block out bound connections I currently am using KIS have been for many years., do to current conditions I am looking for new security set up?
Why not just use Windows Firewall itself, since you're already using Defender.? It's a good firewall, and has improved greatly in Windows < 10. Something like Windows Firewall control is a nice gui for it and makes it easier to use.
why not https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/windows-firewall-control-wfc-by-binisoft-org.347370/ ? windows security has advantage when using a standard user account, not admin rights.
Why not the Windows inbuilt, it is good and simple when you use an extension for it. Simplewall from henry++ is a good one. If you also want the hips within a firewall there are other ways to solve that.
I would go for TinyWall, it's very simple to operate. It's also a third party firewall, so it doesn't rely on the built-in Windows firewall which it actually leaves enabled.
pure crap, not safe against manipulations and disabling, and not compatible with the windows firewall.
You must be thinking of the other one which name i have forgotten. Thoose problem you are mentioning i have never heard of. It is highly regarded on Github and also here.
Well, at least it's pure crap & not adulterated crap. Why not advise Henry++ (developer) of these weaknesses and give him the opportunity to fix them? His websites for the Simplewall firewall are Henry++ and GIT.Hub. Per HenryPP's website, here's a brief, overall description of Simplewall:
with admin rights you can kick off nearly all security programs which dont have a self protection. simplewall is one of those. even binisofts WFP has more own security - you cannot delete or change rules in background. i dont have doubt that it (simplewall) works like other small fitted solutions, but at least its crappy software. installing and using simplewall with (limited) user privileges dont has benefit either.
https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/tinywall-firewall.309739/#post-1955641 simplewall has nothing similar.
The topic of this thread is given as "ZoneAlarm firewall" so I visited it hoping to hear about recent developments from users of that long-standing, highly reputable FW. Instead, after 13 posts so far, not even one post has discussed or even mentioned the Zone Alarm FW. Instead the thread has been largely taken-over by unsupported, one-liner criticisms of other FWs where one member has even resorted to labeling a particular FW with a word that is no more than toilet-talk vulgarity. Hmm... Meanwhile, back on-topic, Zone-Alarm has both a free FW as well as a non-free FW ($22.95 as of Mar 8, 2022). THIS web page has a comparison between the free & paid versions. It works with Windows versions from 7 on up. Since this firewall has rather recently been substantially updated and (hopefully) improved, I do hope some actual users might actually discuss this FW's up-to-date pros & cons. Finally, to go off-topic for only a jif, several months ago the IT switched our net over to a new router with WPA3 & several other security bump-ups plus (like all routers) it includes a built-in FW. Therefore, I bought a late model router with similar capabilities for my home computer. I feel this new router plus Windows FW is safe enough for me but I still hope to hear more about ZA's latest FW.
The paid build has some questionable features from my view. at least its more than a pure firewall (like the free build) which is not necessary with windows 8/10/11.
LOL, good point and I actually did use ZoneAlarm for 8 years or so, it was between 2002 and 2010 if I recall correctly. But I guess what most of us are trying to say is that ZA is a bit bloated and not that user friendly anymore IMO. But I'm sure when it comes to blocking incoming and outgoing connections it's still quite good. And the old version even had some HIPS feature, not sure about the latest versions.
The only thing i remember for ZA that it worked directly on windows firewall rules, like binisoft wfc. but, ancient information. i wont count on less/not secured or complicated and full featured software firewalls. want access - yes/no/maybe - address/port. but scanning for malware or injecting dll for anti-exploit or similar is no longer needed. if such features are needed and welcome - install any security suite, but not those intermediate products. at least there is only a hand full (maybe less) of firewalls which are pretty nice. and from my view HIPS is much overrated, even with a learning mode it takes too much time and work for small results. edit for the records: i am trialing WFC for a couple of weeks now. i used to use Windows 10 Firewall Control before (sphinxsoft) for a longer period (since v4). currently still in learning mode and second installation because of issues which seem to be resolved with this. WFC works directly on windows firewall and its rules.
