I didn't think I'd be saying this until I actually read the article but I do agree with Susan. It was more realistic than what most people's expectations are.
I have a very good reason or, even, reasons for my comment, but... It's only my personal (and very strong) opinion about it. N.B. Just to be clear, I don't recommend my opinion to anyone.
This is the best description of a VPN when it comes to providing privacy: "[...]it simply moves that risk from your ISP to the VPN vendor". It is a matter of whom you trust more to not spy on you: the VPN provider or your ISP. As for security, a VPN will probably not protect you against an attacker (see myth 3 from the original article).
I liked the article. The only things I use a VPN for are protecting open wifi connections and location shifting for the occasional video that won't play in the USA. As Susan Bradley notes you're either trusting your ISP or the VPN provider, and there's no easy way to assess that.
