Perhaps @aldist may have some ideas

Thanks for the link, but it didn't really enlighten me. I disabled my antivirus program temporarily, but even so I had no success. Even if I simply enter shadow mode, the mere fact of exiting without doing anything else is enough to trigger the BSOD.

I can't think of anything else to do and since there is no direct access to the developer for any assistance, I'm stuck.

I know that this question has already been answered earlier by @Osaban
@Izettso in answer to your question.
    My comment
Tony (the developer of Shadow Defender) was going to make this happen and at one time said it would be ready 'in two months' (if I remember correctly) but in the end I think that he found it not feasible (I never found out why) and the user excitement and topic faded away.

There is no way with current Shadow Defender 'to safely use SD to test a newly installed program if the installation requires a reboot' but there was a program called Shadow User Pro by STORAGECRAFT many years ago where programs could live over a reboot. It had an extensive and professional user guide and extensive 'options'
It is so similar to Shadow Defender (design, visually and layout) that you could imagine that it was made by the same person. Shadow User Pro had 'Shadowmode', 'Exclusion List', 'Auto Commit', and a similar 'architecture' to Shadow Defender.
STORAGECRAFT also made Shadow Server Pro and Shadow Surfer Pro

    Patents here

As I said, it was a long time ago.
    System Requirements were
    Operating System
    Windows NT Workstation, Windows 2000
    Professional, Windows XP Home and
    Windows XP Professional
    Pentium 133 MHz or faster
    RAM
    128 MB

Thank you for the information. A Pentium 133 MHz certainly takes us way back in time! As I use Macrium Reflect for image backups I think that I may safely rely on Macrium if I want to test a new program that requires a reboot.

Now my biggest problem is the BSOD when I exit shadow mode... :(

I uninstalled Shadow Defender. I'll probably reinstall it soon when I have some time available and then I'll send the dump report to the developer as suggested.

    thanks check this location
C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP this is full memory dump you can compress with 7zip
    C:\Windows\Minidump this is small dump
if setting of saving dump not changed so there will in that locations so no need reinstall program

    thanks

Thank you for the information. The MEMORY.DMP file was huge, about 1.6GB uncompressed. The other one was much smaller, and I sent it as an attachment to the support email address. Hopefully I'll get a reply and have a solution.

Thank you, but running on Windows 11 is the key issue. By the way, I've had no response from the SD support.

I have never used Shadow defender in my W10. Its been I don't know how long but perhaps 8 years since I used SD in any of my computers. How is it working in W10 laptops with latest updates installed? As I remember it, it was a very simple program, is it still that way today? Anything I should know or beware about SD before trying it? Are licenses from 10/13 years ago still good today?

    Thank you

    Bo

I use SD 1.5.0.726 on Win 10 (fully updated) without any problems.
    Fast boot/startup turned off.

No idea about old SD versions or licenses working on Win 10 I'm afraid..
    Perhaps @sdmod might know.

I remember about having Fast boot disabled. Perhaps sdmod can confirm if old legit licenses work.

Bo, I cannot speak for all users but the latest SD works very well with the latest Win 10. I personally would recommend using it with default configuration that is I wouldn't touch the file and registry exclusions, and try to commit on the fly using the right click menu, cheers.

That is how I use it too.

Yes (on both counts)! - I'm running the latest version and my license is from 2010. ;)

    You can try this:

If on an HDD, uninstall SD - then run chkdsk /r (from an elevated cmd prompt) - then reinstall SD (v1.5.0.726).
If on an SSD, uninstall SD - restart system - then reinstall SD (v1.5.0.726).

Same here, that is also how I used SD with some exeptions. The only exclusions that I used in the past was for Bookmarks in Firefox and for my Downloads folder.

Nowdays downloads are larger than they were 10/12 years ago. What you guys think is best for recovering 1GB
files, excluding the "one" download folder or right clicking to exclude?

elam, trying to recover plenty of small files might result in failure. the best practise is to recover single large files, one by one. get it?

It's a download folder he's talking about. I go for excluding it from being shadowed in the first place.

The question I posted was for adults, not kids.Sorry.

I meant files that have the size of 1GB. It is one file, not one hundred files that together come to 1GB. Got it now.

So, what I would like to know is how well is the function nowadays for recovering files that have a size around 1GB. You DL a file that weights 1GB. Does right clicking it to recover it works well?

Regardless of the answer. I rather have my "one" download folder and exclude that folder. I used to that 10 years ago and it worked well at the time. But in the past, files were little. Now, they are larger. That males the chances for creating issues for SD greater. And that is why I would like to know what I am asking.

    Hope you got it now.

no, elam. see, you don't get it. with sd, the larger the files you recover, the lesser the chance it will fail.
