Just a "strange" question.
Is it possible to darken the Brave icon?

I doubt it. I know what you mean though. I think it's because the design is high contrast between the two colours.



It appears brighter than the Firefox icon in the Ubuntu vertical dock.

I think it's the white contrasted with the orange that makes it stand out so much.

 

Yes. On Linux I use "convert", provided by ImageMagick (which is in the repos of most distros). There are several Brave icons and I darkened the 32, 48, and 64 px ones.

In short,

convert -brightness-contrast -10x0  infile outfile

Changing "-10" to "-20" makes the image darker. On my system, I went with "-50".

I have to do this each time Brave updates, so I made a context-menu entry for my file manager and a few aliases to speed things up.

 

I'm pretty sure ImageMagick was bundled with Ubuntu at one time. I always thought it was a tad buggy.

I myself am more than "a tad buggy" and have no problem accepting bugginess in software as long as the positives outweigh the negatives

IIRC, ImageMagick provides the "guts" for a lot of image manipulation tools, at least in the Linux world. I find it pretty useful.

 

I couldn't get on with it to be honest. I probably should have persevered more.



I'm a great fan of GIMP and Pinta.



The simplest I have installed now is probably KolourPaint.



They're all snaps, but don't tell anybody lol.

 

Or please do - as the Pinta Snap is much better than the Pinta repository version or the PPA version.

 

Yeah, the PPA needs dependencies, I don't know about the repo. I think Canonical will fix snaps eventually. The idea's good in theory. The Brave snap is supposed to be buggy.

 

No doubt, Gimp, Pinta, KolourPaint, etc are all wonderful!

I've set up a "service menu" (somewhat like Thunar's custom action) for the convert command I mentioned. So, if I want to reduce the brightness of an image, I open Dolphin, Kubuntu's file manager, to the folder containing the image, right-click on the image and get five images with varying degrees of brightness. In the picture below, the right-most icon is the original:

 

Maybe someone should talk to Brave about their Day-Glo icon.

 

Very cool, but...
It's not that easy for some (including me) people.

 

But I have Windows.

 

The application is cross-platform.

I find it funny that Brave updates pretty much as soon as a new version is released on Linux but Firefox is still on FF96.0 in Kubuntu.

 

Same with Ubuntu.



Brave updates promptly on Ubuntu, although it does use Chromium as a base.

I don't know if the point releases to Firefox 96 had to do with Linux, but sometimes, IIRC, Canonical doesn't push out updates if they're not involving Linux. (I get Firefox direct from Mozilla and apt doesn't know that because it's installed locally.)

 

Yeah, quicker, but not as colourful lol.

 

Mint Firefox is at 96.0.3. I think FF updated to 96.0.2 in Solus on Friday when I last booted into it. Solus usually only gets updates once a week.

 

Well, as long as it's more or less up to date I don't think it matters on Linux. Unless there's a huge security problem, of course.
