Finally, after the update the trial is not forced through your throat and you can click the decline button :thumb:

My Emsisoft Anti-Malware license expired last week.

Would it make more sense to run MBAM as first and Windows Defender as second defence, or the other way around?

(I was not using the real-time features of MBAM so far)

If MBAM Premium is registered in Windows Security, Defender will be disabled. Better to not register MBAM in Windows Security then it can act as a second layer to Defender if required. Questionable though whether MBAM adds much for the impact on the system it has.

So are you saying that MBAM is not very effective? What do you base that on?

I've used MBAM for years as a second layer with either WD or Avast. It's fine as an on-demand scanner but the free version is enough for that. Lab tests have shown that it's results are pretty mediocre as real time protection and that it's pretty heavy on the system. If I didn't have a lifetime licence I probably would have removed it years ago. There's plenty of other reviews/user feedback online who have reached same conclusion.

Actually the last 2 or 3 tests I've seen, MB has done very well.

Fair enough. I also have a life-time license so I keep using it, but I don't notice the real time protections impacting my system much. Coincidently I also use Avast along side it :thumb:

It has improved but usually with high numbers of FPs. Since enabling Quad9 over DoH several months ago I haven't heard a peep from MBAM.

I would use WD with Configure Defender, but you aware that you can use both for real time protection right? I would not register MB in Windows Security and rely on it for my sole protection even with periodic scanning in WD.

    No, I was not.

So disabling integration makes them run both at real-time? (Without clashes?)

Yes, you can run both in real time with no issues, just turn off the setting in MB that registers MB in the Windows security settings. ( sorry I don't remember the exact wording in the MB gui). If you have trouble finding it someone can find a screenshot for you.

Already done after reading your previous post. Thanks for informing me about this option!

In the "Manage Providers" section of Windows Defender I see "No providers" for the Web option.

There's probably no way to register MBAM for that section only (but not for Antivirus and Firewall)?

Quite true and @digmor crusher is also quite right. Do not permit Malwarebytes for Windows (MB4) to be registered within Windows® and enjoy the protections of both. Then, most default settings within MB4 should be allowed to remain. No mutual exclusions are required to peacefully coexist.

Of course the free edition of MB4 offers no real-time behavioral protections and can not be expected to remediate after polymorphic file infectors such as W32/Sality where the system can never be reasonably repaired without a Windows reinstall or recovery from known good backups.

As to published independent testing - many so-called experts artificially place malware to be evaluated on the Windows desktop therefore avoiding the multiple protection layers of MB4. Malwarebytes management will not attempt to satisfy the the evaluation methodologies of a few just to artificially attain higher scores. This holds true for both its consumer and its enterprise products. The client's system protection comes first.

Thanks for this tip. I found the Windows Security Center switch in the MBAM settings/security section.

Are there any third party reviews that you feel properly test MBAM's features?

    Hello @Victek

That's a fair question. The last time I looked, the just publish review (I forget whose it was) was based on a then expired consumer premium edition of MB4. That revealed the significant delay between the writer's date of submission and the date it was published. I do remember that delay was months. So my answer to your question is - No, I haven't read any yet. And to be fair, this must also be happening to other worthy, top tier products.
