I think that I will give McAfee a try. Never tested it really, so I'm curious how it performs.

How is one product of the year and the other top rated product of the year?

Also, I'll be honest, I have not looked at McAfee in years but it would take much more than this press release for me to do so. Effectiveness aside, it was always really annoying and hard to get rid of.

from what i understand from their explanation on their website, the top-rated product of the year is inferior to the product of the year and superior to the outstanding products of the year.

I have free McAfee with Cox and it is not what I would use on my machines.

@IBK would be interesting to see Wisevector and SecureAPlus in comparative tests.

It's rather confusing. They way I understood it, McAfee, Avast, AVG and Bitdefender are all on a shared first place because their scores are exactly the same. But only one can get product of the year award, and the others get outstanding product award(Depending on whether one has already had product of the year award in the past). The top rated award is for products who didn't get first place but still reached a very high score.

Does anyone take any notice of these types of tests anymore?

Since I’m using Windows Defender, I don’t bother for these tests anymore.

I get a number of emails a day telling me my McAfee av license has expired and asking me to contact them through the email link to renew it at a discount, just give them all my bank details and pin code... Started getting similar emails for N0rt0n. Oddly, most refer to me needing the apple version. I have not and never will own an apple product you cannot eat. I will also never buy a McAfee or NORTON AV product if they are the target for these scammers.

100%. WD is as good as any of them and you are not auto-renewed or hounded by emails, texts and popups. Silence is always golden for me WD does it best.

LOL, what silence when it can't even update its signatures without relying on Windows update and is the heaviest AV for many years in all AV Comparatives Performance test? People who use WD just live in a bubble telling themselves that it's good because its free, no popups, bla bla bla. I use Panda Free AV which I the lightest AV and one of the most secure for many month now and guess what? not once did I get a popup or nag or anything after installing it and simply skipping the bundled Opera Browser installation that is bundled with the installer.

I tried it once, will never touch it again, there is no way to add exclusions.

@Spartan Panda is one of the lightest antiviruses there is, but just about any other big name antivirus provides better protection. This is why I ditched it long ago.
    You can add exclusions.

I have Panda as well, but your assertions do not refute what I said. Both WD and Panda are the most "silent" I have found- the others are very annoying much of the time.

oh that's new, last time I tried McAfee it didn't have a way to exclude anything. I even contacted their support and said there is no way. I used the McAfee Gamer's Edition Antivirus

I'd like to see WD add the option to exclude a UNC path. Every time I open a network share it freezes for 30 seconds or so while it scans the share, yet again, every day, forever. Or at least some mechanism where already scanned files are not scanned again.

I agree, that would be great. Backing up data (mostly document files) over network took forever when MD was enabled on my system at work.
