I want to convert mbr to gpt with out loosing data and of course being able to boot. I have windows 10 with one disk, with a C: drive only, total of 3 volumes, listed in backup software . I have got conflicting messages from some places. Some say you cant do it, but my understanding is that you can use mbr2gpt /validate and then mbr2gpt /convert. I did try this and had some issues. So went back to MBR by deleting the disk and then restore using Paragon 17 (with some issues) Anyway have others had success with mbr2gpt on an existing disk and booted successfully? No fuss no muss no data loss. Alternatively, if the process works in correcting the drive but does not boot, can I just restore the C drive and it will boot, I think that if I restore the Disk, this will not work because then Im copying MBR onto a GPT drive. Thanks.
stevwolf, How old is your computer? If it is pre 2017 you could encounter unstable UEFI firmware and wish you had never converted. Your Win10 won't run any faster on a GPT disk.
Well it was, but at least Id like to try it. I have kept the bios up to date. Also I am having problems backing up to large 5 TB drives.
Here is some theory... https://kb.terabyteunlimited.com/kb-articles/converting-a-gpt-data-or-windows-disk-to-mbr-embr/ https://kb.terabyteunlimited.com/kb...-or-mbr-to-gpt-using-the-chgdtype-tbs-script/ If you create an entire drive image before you start mbr2gpt, you will be able to restore your MBR system if something goes wrong.
I used EaseUS Partition Manager when I needed to convert my boot disk to GPT. Screenshot now shows the other way around, but it's just that easy.
