Google is reportedly “aggressively” working on winning a contract with the Pentagon, even though some of its previous Department of Defense work sparked major backlash from employees, according to The New York Times. According to the report, Google’s Cloud division has reassigned engineers to work on a proposal for Google to contribute to the Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability program, which the DoD describes as an attempt to “achieve dominance in both traditional and non-traditional warfighting domains.”

The contract Google is reportedly looking into is one that will open to multiple companies to submit proposals and do work for, and the DoD estimates it could be a multi-billion dollar project.

In a document describing what cloud providers will be expected to do, the DoD says that anyone hoping to win a contract will have to “enable access to crucial warfighting data” with a variety of classification levels (including Secret and Top Secret info).

Google has changed its mind about dealing with the US Department of Defense and is chasing a juicy chunk of the Pentagon's new Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) contract.

There must have been some lingering memories of the slogan when Google dropped out of the bidding for the Pentagon's $10bn JEDI contract, saying that it wouldn't align with the company's values.

The JWCC is obviously something totally different as this three-year deal will be a multi-vendor contract, although with only two vendors deemed "capable of meeting the department's requirements," (Microsoft and AWS, as per the DoD), Google will have its work cut out for it.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian on Thursday confirmed recent reports that his company wants a piece of the Department of Defense’s forthcoming multi-cloud procurement, the Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability.

Kurian wrote in a blog post that if Google Cloud is invited by the Department of Defense (DOD) to bid on the Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability (JWCC), “we will absolutely bid.”

“And if selected as one of the compliant vendors, we will proudly work with the DoD to help them modernize their operations following the process we have in place for working with our customers, including the processes we’ve developed around our AI Principles,” Kurian wrote.

The CEO’s comments back up speculation and reports that emerged in recent weeks Google Cloud was vying to rebuild its relationship with the DOD, hoping to earn a spot on the JWCC contract.

“We understand that not every Googler will agree with this decision, but we believe Google Cloud should seek to serve the government where it is capable of doing so and the work aligns with our AI principles and company values,” his blog post says.
“The JWCC framework will offer up many opportunities for Google to help the men and women in our armed services to ensure their success and safety, and we look forward to doing so just as Google has been doing for many years.”

The Department of Defense has invited four hyperscale cloud providers to bid on its Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability contract.

The department announced Friday that it has issued solicitations to Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft and Oracle to bid for spots on the Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability. The JWCC is DOD’s indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ), enterprise multi-cloud acquisition that has replaced the former Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) cloud contract, which stalled before the department could move it into operation due to a flurry of bid protests from Amazon and Oracle.
