Very bad score for Windows Defender. Yet it does not show that much difference on my system, I was using Kaspersky before.
According to this test, Kaspersky is even lighter than Eset. Well done, Eugene. As for Windows Defender - no suprise here.
I tested 13 others and they slowed down my systems more than WD and I have very fast computers. Those tests have a great statistical variance depending on your system. One size does not fill all.
Note that the test shows various scenarios. So besides the standard "everyone's machine is different" we often hear. You can see file copying, archiving and unarchiving, launching applications, downloading files and lastly browsing websites. The "browsing websites" is most likely the scenario users will focus the most to determine if an AV has slow performance. And as we can see everyone got a high score there, including Microsoft. The ones Microsoft fell short were in file copying (first run) and archiving/unarchiving. Not the kind of stuff most users would bother to test. A question. How long ago did you used Kaspersky? I'm asking because I have read from others it has recently got a big improvement in performance.
I've recently uninstalled Norton on my desktop PC and installed KSC. To be honest I can't see any major difference performance wise. Usability is a different matter though.
I would say my license ended about 6 months ago on both my machines and since then I’m using WD. I had Kaspersky installed for at least 4 years before that and it never slow down my computers.
I'm sure that for most people, ESET will be lighter. While I'm sure that the test results accurately reflect how the products performed for them, very often my experience with antiviruses is very different to the results of performance tests.
I have just changed from my old Webroot, to Nod32 antivirus. I'm really surpriced so light it is. Before that I tried Kaspersky antivirus to compare. And Eset do lies in the top 1-2 regarding light performance. Webroot had to give way to Nod32. I am officially a Nod32 endorse.
Defender running solo without any other security software or hardening is noticeably slower on my WIn10 PC (about 6yrs old) than Avast Free. The only surprise to me is that it scores as 'very fast' on launching applications because I'd rank it as slow on that too So much depends on the machine and the software installed that any of these AVs are installed on though.
