'5D' storage could fit 500TB on a CD-sized glass disc That would be 10,000 times more data than Blu-ray discs. November 1, 2021 https://www.engadget.com/5-d-storage-could-fit-500-tb-on-cd-sized-disc-095039455.html
I think this has great potential for very long term storage because it takes ~4000 - 5000 years (some even more than 1 million years!) for glass to decompose. They will need to address the speed issue. While the article makes it sound fast, 60 days to fill a 500TB disk is a long time. Also problematic is the drive is not your everyday, off-the-shelf DVD/Blu-ray drive.
My problem with drives has never been the physical space they take. They're already so small anyway. U can easily have 4TB ssd in ur pc and it will take almost no space at all, like a slice of bread if not less For anything bigger just use your massive speed ISP for just 75 euro a month! That is 1.25 gb/sec speed download! And 0.25 gb/sec upload! And use Nextcloud with your own server provider or: Degoo - 100GB for free Terabox - 1TB for free Idrive - 1.05 / 4.29 euro a month for 1TB / 5TB Blomp - 8.62 euro a month for 10TB Letsupload.io - unlimited storage but might be limitations to maximum file size You can also just make a bunch of free accounts, just gotta use a chunk splitter if u got really big files And don't forget Cryptomator and CryptPad
Too bad it's not available to those in the rural US still on dial-up or satellite. And no, I'm not one of them.
Yeah I live in the capital of my country hehe This pic is from the most popular and used ISP throughout the capital and country Although those are only max speeds, not guaranteed (i haven't tried it, yet) And of course it requires 2 year contract to get this monthly price
