Dutch police have taken a rare step this week and sent letters to 29 individuals who used a now-defunct DDoS-for-hire service —also known as a DDoS booter— to launch DDoS attacks against various targets.

In the letters, Dutch officials warned users that they’d been added to a database of past miscreants, and any involvement in new DDoS attacks will lead to a criminal case.

We have registered you in our system and you will now receive a final warning. If similar incidents occur in the future, we will prosecute. In that case, take into account a conviction, criminal record and the loss of your computer and/or laptop.

The letters were sent to 29 Dutch nationals who registered accounts on the MineSearch.rip portal [archived], which Dutch authorities seized and took down in July 2020.

Today, Dutch police said they analyzed the seized data, and instead of starting criminal procedures against the site’s users, they’ve decided to give the 29 suspects one more chance.

This week in creepy news: a Southern California man has admitted to conspiring with others to hack into hundreds of Apple iCloud accounts—mostly to steal nude photographs of young women.

Hao Kuo Chi, 40, pled guilty to charges of conspiracy and computer fraud in U.S. District Court in Florida on Friday, the Justice Department recently announced. Chi was arrested earlier this year after a police raid on his LA County home revealed tens of thousands of stolen photos and videos.

He and others “conspired to hack into the Apple iCloud accounts of hundreds of individuals across the country in search of nude photos and videos.” After confiscating the intimate material, Chi and others would sell, trade, or keep the naked photos and videos for himself, an associated plea agreement shows.

Chi advertised his nude-stealing services online, portraying himself as a kind of “hacker-for-hire” and using the moniker “icloudripper4you.”

The victims were led to believe that they were in a genuine romantic relationship but were scammed out of their money.

“The fraudsters intimidated and berated their victims, ruined their lives and then disappeared,” SAPS said today in a press release.
The group also engaged in a tactic known as BEC (business email compromise), where they breached a company’s email and then misled customers or suppliers to make payments into accounts they controlled.

After breaching UPMC's human resources databases, Johnson stole the Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and W-2 info (including names, Social Security numbers, addresses and salary information) of more than 65,000 employees and sold it on the dark web.

Twenty-year-old Kyell Bryan of Pennsylvania has pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft for a SIM swapping and cryptocurrency theft scheme, according to the United States Attorney’s Office of the District of Maryland.

According to the initial indictment statement, in June 2019, Bryan, who was 19, conspired with Jordan K. Milleson, then 21, and others. The group engaged in phishing and vishing (voice phishing) to trick employees at an unnamed wireless operator into coughing up their login credentials.
They used those credentials to conduct unauthorized SIM swaps, redirecting their target’s phone number to bypass the two-factor authentication process that is supposed to protect accounts.

What just happened? A former mobile carrier employee has been sentenced for his role in a SIM-swapping conspiracy that targeted at least nineteen people. Florida resident Stephen Defiore accepted bribes of around $500 from someone every time he swapped a customer’s SIM.

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) writes that Defiore accepted multiple bribes for performing the switches. The act usually requires some form of social engineering but can be carried out with a lot more ease if criminals involve cellular provider employees, as was the case here.

22-year-old Alejandro Benitez is accused of publishing a list of Chico State students who applied for a religious exemption from the university's COVID-19 vaccine requirement.
The spreadsheet posted online included requests from 130 students. Student names and other personal information were listed in 18 of the entries, according to the Butte County District Attorney's Office.

A Bellevue man was sentenced in federal court Wednesday for stalking a candidate for the Nebraska Legislature in 2018.

U.S. District Judge Brian Buescher sentenced Dennis Sryniawki, 48, to 12 months and a day in prison with three years of supervised release to follow. He was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine, according to the release from Acting U.S. Attorney Jan Sharp’s office. As it was a federal case, there will be no parole.
Evidence showed he had sent six emails, from two different accounts, on two different days in 2018 to the candidate. As he had been married to the candidate’s wife, the emails contained personal details about her and her daughter, and demanded the candidate withdraw from the race or he would release explicit photos of his wife and stepdaughter.

They then created copycat cards that were then used to withdraw more than $500,000 from hundreds of victims' bank accounts at various ATMs, she said.
The crew replaced 88 terminals with imitations in 80 different stores operated by Michaels across 19 states, a federal complaint on file in US District Court in Camden, NJ says.

The actors were reportedly manufacturing these independently, lacing them with crypto-stealing malware and selling them to targets.

"Moreover, these individuals independently manufactured and sold flash drives with viruses that hacked into victims' digital wallets and stole cryptocurrency from them," says the statement from Ukrainian police.

He converted the money he got through illicit means to cryptocurrency worth £200,000 at that time, but since then, the market price grew, so he is due over £2 million. The prosecutor revealed that the teenager perpetrated the fraud via a fake website mimicking Love2Shop that people use to purchase gift vouchers, which he used to gather email addresses and Love2Shop account details of dozens of victims before redirecting them to the genuine site.

According to the indictment, the defendants and their conspirators allegedly sent phishing emails to employees of victim companies and organizations in the United States, in an attempt to steal their email account credentials.

The alleged leader of the hacking group Team-Xecuter has reportedly admitted taking part in a piracy conspiracy against Japanese gaming giant Nintendo.

Canadian national Gary Bowser, who is also known as GaryOPA, was arrested in October last year on suspicion of creating and selling illegal circumvention devices that enabled users to hack video game consoles so they could be used to play pirated copies of authentic gaming titles.
Consoles against which the device was effective included the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo 3DS, the Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition, the Sony PlayStation Classic, and the Microsoft Xbox.

Romanian law enforcement authorities have arrested two suspects believed to be Sodinokibi/REvil ransomware affiliates on November 4, both of them allegedly responsible for infecting thousands of victims.

DIICOT (the Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism) and judicial police officers carried out four home searches in Constanța, seizing mobile devices (laptops, mobile phones) and storage media.
On the same day, Kuwaiti authorities also arrested a third REvil ransomware affiliate, the three of them being suspected of roughly 7,000 attacks and of asking more than €200 million in ransoms.

Authorities arrested seven suspects linked to REvil this year in total. Three other individuals believed to be REvil affiliates were apprehended in South Korea in February, April, and October, and one was arrested in Europe last month.

The Spanish police have arrested 45 people who are believed to be members of an online fraud group that operated twenty websites to defraud at least 200 people of 1,500,000 Euros ($1.73 million).

The simultaneous weekend raids took place in various provinces of Spain, and were the result of lengthy investigations that began in July 2019.

Luring with low-priced electronics
The actors created at least twenty distinct fraudulent web portals where they offered various consumer electronic products at an alluringly low price.

The actors used the order information to contact the person who made the purchase, and told them that they had been scammed.
Subsequently, they informed the victim that the only way to get their money back was to become “money mules” themselves.

Offering French loans
The second type of fraudulent operation of the same ring came in the form of online loan advertisements posted and promoted on social media.

The actors posed as French financiers and offered loans on the condition of receiving a small deposit that was supposedly required for covering loan application commissions and relevant expenses.

The Spanish police mention strong links between this particular group and others in Germany, Austria, France, and Poland, and so the investigations will continue in collaboration with Interpol and Europol.
