We reported last week that Tesla will begin the wide roll-out of their Full Self Driving beta feature at the end of this week, as the result of their week-long Safety Score assessment becomes available.
Now it seems that date has been pushed back again, according to a tweet by Elon Musk.

As it appears often the case, Musk wants to make further improvements to the software before exposing the general public to the software. The roll-out is therefore waiting for FSD Beta 10.2, which is only being released around the 8th October.

Ford and General Motors told a federal judge they’re planning to settle a trademark battle over the term “Cruise” to describe hands-free driving. Attorneys for the automakers said they’re working out the terms of the settlement and asked the court for a conditional dismissal. The two sides will report back within 60 days if they’re unable to come to an agreement.

In August, Ford filed a motion to have the suit dismissed, arguing that the term “cruise” had been been in “ubiquitous use” for 50 years as a term for driver-assist features, a term that consumers don’t associate with any one carmaker. A Ford spokesperson called GM’s trademark claims “meritless and frivolous,” adding that Ford had petitioned the US Patent and Trademark Office seeking to have GM’s trademarks of “Cruise” and “SuperCruise” rescinded.

Qualcomm scored the purchase of Swedish automotive tech company Veoneer, nudging out Magna International with a higher bid.

Qualcomm and investment group SSW Partners said Monday they would acquire Veoneer for $37 per share in an all-cash transaction. At closing, SSW said it would sell Veoneer’s Arriver tech – an advanced driver assistance system stack that includes sensors and software – to Qualcomm and retain the Swedish company’s other Tier 1 supplier businesses.
Veoneer had previous agreed to sell itself to Magna. It looked like that deal would move forward, until Qualcomm submitted its bid for $800 million, or 18%, more.

When Qualcomm submitted its bid to acquire Veoneer — nearly a month after Magna’s — it was not entirely a surprise. The two companies signed a collaborative agreement at the beginning of this year to develop software and chips for driver-assistance systems.

Ocado Group has invested £10m in autonomous mobility startup Wayve. Building on a previous partnership with Oxbotica in April, the new partnership aims to help the grocery delivery firm accelerate the development of autonomous grocery deliveries for complex urban environments.

Ocado plans to use the trial to understand how Wayve can handle the congested streets and challenging manoeuvres that last-mile delivery technology must be equipped to navigate. The company also plans to fit Wayve’s technology to some of its existing delivery fleet, which will be used to provide data for training and validating Wayve’s technology.

General Motors is pushing further into the world of semi-autonomous driving with Ultra Cruise, a new hands-free system that will launch on select 2023 Cadillac models. Whereas Super Cruise offers hands-free driving only on certain highways, GM says Ultra Cruise will eventually be available for every paved road in the United States and Canada, covering "95 percent of all driving scenarios."

GM doesn't call out Tesla directly in its Ultra Cruise announcement, but the automaker does claim Ultra Cruise and its bevy of sensors "leads to the most robust hands-free driver assist system for our customers." Only select GM vehicle owners will experience Ultra Cruise, however, as it will only be offered on premium vehicles whereas Tesla offers FSD on all its models.

After what has been years of waiting, Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla will start rolling out their Full Self Driving beta feature to qualifying drivers today.

Qualifying drivers are quite a select group at the moment however and includes those who paid up to £10,000 to purchase the feature, applied to join the new beta and have a Safety Score of 100.

FSD Beta 10.2 rolls out Friday midnight to ~1000 owners with perfect 100/100 safety scores.
Rollouts will hold for several days after that to see how it goes.
If that looks good, beta will gradually begin rolling out to 99 scores & below.

The Safety Score is generated from observation of your driving patterns and behaviour over a week period and are presumed to be the most responsible drivers.

One of Apple's self-driving test vehicles was involved in a minor incident on September 27, according to a filing made with the California DMV [PDF].

The self-driving vehicle, which was operating in autonomous mode at the time, clipped a curb while going 13 miles per hour. There was no damage reported, but the car did require a realignment.

A test vehicle, operating in autonomous mode in Sunnyvale and turning right from Mathilda Avenue onto Del Ray Avenue, made contact with a curb at approximately 13 miles per hour. While there was no tire or wheel damage, the contact resulted in misalignment. No other agents were involved, no injuries were reported, and law enforcement was not called to the scene.

Apple's self-driving vehicles have been involved in several very minor accidents, but most have been caused by other drivers and while not in autonomous mode. This is the second event that has occurred where an Apple vehicle was being operated in autonomous mode.

‘Driverless’ Tesla crash in Texas wasn’t actually driverless, NTSB says

The driver and passenger seats were both occupied in a Tesla Model S that crashed into a tree outside of Houston on April 17th, killing both occupants, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

The crash made news when local investigators on the scene initially reported that neither body recovered from the Telsa was behind the wheel. Mark Herman, a constable from Harris County Precinct 4, told KHOU that one of the men killed was in the front passenger seat of the car, while the other was in the back seat.

“They are 100 percent certain that no one was in the driver seat driving that vehicle at the time of impact. They are positive,” Herman told KHOU.

Now, the agency has released a new preliminary report further refuting the claim that the driver seat was unoccupied at the time of the crash.
NTSB said that its investigation was still in the preliminary stage and that “no conclusions about how the crash happened should be drawn from the information in this investigative update.”

After a bit of a delay, Tesla rolled out their Full Self-Driving Beta 10.3 a few hours ago, and drivers in the beta have already posted their first drives.

FSD beta 10.3 is the first to be released to drivers with a Safety Score of 99 and below, and some users with a safety score of 99 are reporting receiving the software.

Tesla’s decision to test its “Full Self Driving” advanced driver assistance software with untrained vehicle owners on public roads has attracted scrutiny and criticism, and that was before this latest release.

Version 10.3 began rolling out on Saturday night / Sunday morning with a long list of release notes. The list mentions changes starting with introducing driver profiles that can swap between different characteristics for following distance, rolling stops, or exiting passing lanes. It’s supposed to better detect brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights from other vehicles, along with reduced false slowdowns and improved offsetting for pedestrians.

Transport for NSW has announced it will be taking the next steps in its autonomous vehicle trial by working with driverless technology firm Motional to investigate and develop a plan for using driverless rideshare services.

Transport for NSW customer strategy and technology deputy secretary Joost de Kock said the plan would lay the foundation for future robotaxi services.

"We're excited to be working with Motional to start laying the foundation for a driverless future in NSW. Today's studies may very well shape how our communities move around in years to come," he said.

He pointed out that to date, the state government has run autonomous shuttle bus services in Sydney Olympic Park to test integration with traffic lights and digital bus stops for turn-up-and-go service.

The adoption of connected autonomous vehicles on state roads is one of the priority areas that has been set out in the NSW government's future transport technology roadmap 2021-24 that was released earlier this year.
