BTW, I noticed something. I was always combining O&O ShutUp10 with Spybot Anti-Beacon, but the latter always blocked certain ads on google.com related to shopping and I couldn't remove it from my hosts-file, so I decided to remove protections. But O&O ShutUp10 then notified me about al kinds of settings related to tracking that were changed and it needed it a reboot to revert those settings. But I wonder how does O&O ShutUp10 protect against all of this tracking without modifying the hosts-file?

 

Seems like the latest version does not work correctly, it can't revert any changes to settings. Also, I get this feeling that O&O ShutUp10 might have something to do with killing the tray-icon tooltips on my Win 10 1909 system.

 

Not discounting one second against it but O&O is supposed to be a partner to Micro which on the front side one would think their app would be reasonable safe?

 

So are you saying that O&O can't be trusted? I'm guessing that M$ is not too happy with tools that can disable telemetry. But to be honest, I can now understand people who advice not to use these kind of tools, sooner or later they will break stuff. I'm not sure if I'm going to apply any tweaks once I reinstall my Win 10 laptop. I'm probably just going to manually disable stuff in the Win 10 Settings app related to UWP apps.

There's no "Disable Windows 10 to 11 Update Forever"

The reason why it isn't there and why you don't need it is Microsoft isn't forcing Windows 11 down people's throats. Its a purely optional update on eligible PCs.

You know what I don't understand about O&O ShutUp10? Why doesn't it disable UWP apps from getting access to documents, videos and pictures? You can find these settings in the Privacy section from the Settings app.

Thank you for sharing. I like new "Do not show again" option

 

Can't believe they finally added this option. Also, I see that the GUI has been refreshed. I installed it on two Win 10 laptops and I applied all recommended settings without any problems, so far so good.

 

It's been a long while since I checked in on Edge and I wanted to see if there was anything worthwhile since then. (There isn't.)

Since I've got msedge.exe and microsoftedgeupdate.exe outbounds blocked in the firewall I allowed 'em temporarily to get an Edge update squared away. Initially, there was a message that Edge needed to re-installed (!) where clicking the button took me to the Get Edge home page. But I dismissed that and used "About Microsoft Edge" to take care of it.

Anyhow...

I noted this "Your browser is managed by your organization" notification and as a result I could not set, for example, "Use secure DNS..." to get me some nice DoH. Settings are flagged with a little padlock and an info button: "This setting is turned off for managed browsers."

I was correct in assessing it was O&O ShutUp where I had all settings toggled green under both new version Edge and legacy Edge. Setting them all to red returned Edge to unmanaged.

What is interesting, in setting anything green for legacy stuff in O&O, the new version Edge still thinks it's managed. (Yes, it's the new version; MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe is no longer extant.)

I wrapped this up in a report to O&O support and got a reply:

Oh well. Edge and update re-blocked.

BTW, I sent out the email to support on the Saturday evening and got the reply this morning, Monday.
